Kirkland, Wash. - Giving it more ammunition to roll out its high-speed wireless (WiMax) network in more cities across the U.S., Kirkland, Wash.-based Clearwire said on Tuesday that it has raised another $1.6 billion, including a $1.2 billion investment from partner Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S).

The reportedly "industry-wide" review is said to center on purported agreements between the companies not to hire away top talent from one another.

Chipmaker Intel Hit with Record $1.45 Billion Fine in Europe

Washington - As the Obama administration pledges to increase its anti-trust enforcement, the European Commission on Tuesday fined chipmaker Intel (NASD: INTC) a record $1.45 billion for engaging in what it called illegal practices designed to exclude competitors -- most notably rival AMD -- from the market for computer chips. According to the organization, those activities included giving hidden rebates to computer makers for using Intel's chips, paying a major retailer to stock only computers containing the chips and paying computer manufacturers to halt or delay the launch of products using competitors' chips.

San Francisco - DreamWorks Animation SKG (NYSE: DWA) has announced plans to produce all of its forthcoming films in digital 3D, starting with "Monsters vs. Aliens" in March 2009, and has partnered with chipmaker Intel (NASD: INTC) on the technology, Reuters reported. The companies are collaborating on a new 3D movie image brand called InTru 3D, which will combine Intel's new standalone graphics chip with 3D technology the company acquired from start-ups.

Santa Clara, Calif. - Intel (NASD: INTC) announced on Tuesday that it has formed a strategic alliance with film studio DreamWorks Animation (NYSE: DWA), aimed at "revolutionizing 3D filmmaking technology," the companies said. Under the agreement, Intel will provide DreamWorks Animation with advanced chips, as well as software engineers to optimize DreamWorks' applications for these advanced processors, which Intel said will allow DreamWorks to "render higher quality images more quickly and to modify them with greater ease." The first film to be produced under the partnership will be "Monsters vs. Aliens," set for release next March.

Google Asks FCC to Open "White Space" for Broadband

Washington - Google (NASD: GOOG) on Monday sent a letter to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), urging the agency to allow unused portions of the TV spectrum -- or "white space" -- to be used to provide wireless Internet access nationwide. "The unique qualities of the TV white space -- unused spectrum, large amounts of bandwidth, and excellent propagation characteristics -- offer a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to provide ubiquitous wireless broadband access to all Americans," Richard Whitt, Google's Washington telecom and media counsel, writes in the letter.

PC, Game Makers Form PC Gaming Alliance

San Francisco - A group of hardware and software creators, game developers and publishers on Thursday announced the formation of the PC Gaming Alliance, a non-profit whose stated purposed is to advance the PC as a worldwide gaming platform. Members include Acer/Gateway, Activision Publishing, AMD, Dell/Alienware, Epic Games, Intel, Microsoft, Nvidia and Razer. Market research firm DFC Intelligence projects the PC game business will grow more than 80% over the next five years, with major increases in the number of PC gamers, revenue from digital distribution, and PC hardware sales.

BT Vision Offers Free Film Downloads With Targeted Ads

London - U.K. broadband service BT Vision on Wednesday announced the launch of a test of a new service that will offer users free online film rentals for watching targeting advertisements. The company partnered with Hiro Media, Intel and FremantleMedia Enterprises on the three-month trial at the BT Download Store, which will initially offer three films: "Mischief Night," "Played" and "The Punk Rock Movie." U.K. viewers will be asked to download free video software from Hiro Media, and also provide anonymous demographic information that will allow the software to dynamically target ads.
