New York, N.Y. -- The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) announced on Tuesday that Internet advertising totaled nearly $2.7 billion in the fourth quarter of 2004, the highest quarterly revenue ever reported by the IAB. Estimates for the full-year 2004 totaled just under $9.6 billion -- a 32% increase over full-year 2003 ($7.3 billion). Sales in the fourth quarter of 2004 increased 24% over the fourth quarter in 2003 ($2.2 billion) and were about 17% higher than third quarter of 2004 ($2.3 billion), the report said.

Delaware-based Zone4Play has developed games and applications for customers including Cablevision, TwoWay TV, NTL, LodgeNet and Orange. The company will use the funds to accelerate product development and to expand into emerging markets. "We have recently signed revenue-sharing agreements with major TV platforms and hospitality providers as well as partnering agreements with leading content brands to adapt their games for iTV markets," said Zone4Play CEO Uri Levy. "We are moving forward with our plans for multiplayer games on all interactive channels. Zone4Play anticipates forming additional joint ventures with new business partners shortly."

San Mateo, Calif. -- Liberate Technologies, a provider of interactive TV software and services, announced on Friday that it has filed for Ch. 11 bankruptcy, in order to "resolve certain outstanding liabilities, reduce costs and strengthen its financial position," the company said. Liberate, which makes software used in advanced cable TV set-top boxes, reported $222.3 million in cash and short-term investments and $21.7 million in liabilities. The company has recently suffered an SEC probe into its accounting practices and management turnover, but said it expects to emerge from bankruptcy within 4-6 months.

Emeryville, Calif. -- Shares of Ask Jeeves, a web search engine provider, surged 40% on Thursday after the company announced that it has agreed to acquire New York-based Interactive Search Holdings (ISH), a privately held online search and media company. Terms of the deal include $150 million in cash and 9.3 million shares of common stock and options, for a total of $343 million, based on Ask Jeeves' closing price on Wednesday. "This acquisition will enable us to combine Ask Jeeves' proven strengths in user experience, search technology and brand development with ISH's strengths in distribution and direct marketing," said Steve Berkowitz, the CEO of Ask Jeeves. ISH's web properties and businesses include My Way, My Search, My Web Search, iWon, Excite and the MaxOnline advertising network. The company processed about 700 million web searches in the fourth quarter, according to comScore Media Metrix. This compares to 680 million searches on Ask Jeeves' sites during the same period.

New York -- America Online has confirmed that it will stop producing new set-tops for its AOLTV interactive TV service. The service will still be available to existing subscribers, but production of the Philips set-tops that power the service ceased in November. "The choice was based on not a lot of interest going forward in continuing to develop that particular platform," AOL spokeswoman Anne Bentley told CNET News.com. The AOLTV service offered subscribers a relatively inexpensive means of accessing email and instant messaging through their televisions. Plans with TiVo to introduce a set-top with integrated digital video recording capacity were scrapped last year. An AOL source also told News.com that the AOLTV unit was "hit particularly hard" in recent layoffs at the company.

Milan -- Vitaminic, an international online music distribution network, announced that it has agreed to merge with Italian interactive mobile service provider Buongiorno Group. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The Buongiorno Group reaches around 30 million customers, distributing content to wireless network operators in Italy and Spain, as well as the U.K., France, Germany and Austria. "The merger with Buongiorno represents an outstanding step forward in pursuing Vitaminic's strategy, whose major objective is to reach an undisputed leadership in Europe's digital content distribution through electronic networks," said Vitaminic CEO Gianluca Dettori. "Thanks to the synergies between Buongiorno's distribution and marketing platform and Vitaminic's assets and multimedia content, the merger will create a brand new operator, with a unique competitive position, ready to exploit the great opportunities of upcoming broadband and third generation networks."
