Los Angeles - MySpace is
currently testing an in-browser instant messaging application in Canada, and plans to introduce the feature in
the U.S.
and elsewhere over the next few weeks, CNET News.com reported. The site already
offers a downloadable desktop IM client, and will continue to do so, but is
adding an in-browser chat similar to what rival Facebook offers.

Bellevue, Wash.-based Vidiator said the patents cover the delivery of 3D avatar-based multimedia messages or chat; avatars created via algorithms to generate superior facial expressions derived from audiovisual input; and avatars created using facial tracking technology. The company did not announce plans for any licensing campaign for its new patents.

Dulles, Va. - Two weeks after first leaking the news, AOL on Tuesday officially launched a new service that will allow the 41 million users of its instant messenger to receive free incoming calls through their computers. Through its new AIM Phoneline service, the company said that IM users will be able to get free, local phone numbers to receive the calls, as well as free online voicemail. The company is offering an upgraded service, which allows users to make calls to anyone in the U.S. or 30 other countries, for $14.90 a month. "Our research shows that the need for a separate and confidential phone number is becoming as important to consumers as the need for multiple email addresses," said John McKinley, the president of AOL Digital Services.

Under the plan, users of the company's AIM instant messenger will be able to sign up for a free phone number to receive calls through a new service known as AIM Phoneline. AOL also reportedly will offer an upgraded service allowing them to make calls to anyone in the U.S. or 30 other countries for $14.90 a month. Both services are expected to be launched on May 16. The two companies already team to offer high-speed Internet services.
