Los Angeles - Yahoo (NASD: YHOO) has hired former Talking Points Memo deputy publisher Andrew Golis to head up a new political blog, PaidContent reported. Yahoo maintained that it is not launching a new site or vertical, but rather "ramping up" its original content.

New York - The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB), a consortium of top technology firms and advertisers, called on the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) this week to withdraw its new rules regarding disclosure of payments to bloggers for their coverage, arguing that "offline media have engaged [in such practices] for decades." The FTC last week set new guidelines concerning disclosures made in social media and on blogs where compensation has been given for an endorsement or testimonial.

Philadelphia - Redlasso, a Web-based video news clipping service for bloggers, on Thursday announced is re-launch, after signing new license agreements with Fox, Meredith Broadcasting, Journal Broadcasting Local Television, Gray Television, and Barrington Broadcasting. The service had gone offline last year after being sued by NBC and Fox News for copyright infringement.

FTC: Bloggers Must Disclose Payments for Endorsements

Washington - The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on Monday announced new guidelines governing testimonials and endorsements published by bloggers who are paid for their coverage. "Bloggers who make an endorsement must disclose the material connections they share with the seller of the product or service," the FTC said.

Ex AOLer Greg Coleman Named President of Huffington Post

New York - Greg Coleman, who for two months earlier this year served as the president of AOL's Platform-A ad business, will become the new president and chief revenue officer of popular left-leaning political news site The Huffington Post, AllThingsD reported. Coleman also is the former executive vice president of global sales at Yahoo, as well as the CEO of search and ad targeting start-up NetSeer. Huffington CEO Eric Hippeau has been a member of Yahoo's board for several years. The status of James Smith, Huffington's current chief revenue officer, remains unclear.

Washington - SBNation, a network of sports-related blogs that in July raised $8 million in funding, said on Thursday that it has re-launched its core national site. The new SBNation.com site will feature news, commentary and discussion culled by editors from the company's 212 professional sports blogs, as well as from third-party sites and social networks. The company said that the new format will give fans access to the "most relevant developments on the day's biggest sports news."

Automattic Buys WordPress Spell-Check Plugin After the Deadline

Gawker Media Suffers Denial-of-Service Attack

New York - Blog network Gawker Media experienced a distributed denial-of-service (DDOS) hacker attack over the weekend, CNET News.com reported. The attack was apparently launched against Consumerist, a site that Gawker sold to Consumer Reports but is still hosted on the same servers. The motive for the attack remains unclear.

Gawker Media: Ad Revenues Up 45% in First Half of '09

New York - Blog network Gawker Media has seen its revenues increase 45% in the first half of 2009, according to post on CEO Nick Denton's blog. Denton has predicted last year that media companies would see a decline of up to 40% in ad revenues, given the state of the publishing industry and the economy. "But I was wrong in one respect: a few premium internet brands, Gawker's among them, have withstood the advertising apocalypse," Denton wrote. In addition to its flagship Gawker.com, the company also runs sites including Jezebel, Gizmodo and Kotaku.

Former Variety Editor Anne Thompson's Blog to Join IndieWire

Los Angeles - Former Variety deputy editor Anne Thompson, also a blogger at ThompsonOnHolywood, has signed a deal to publish her blog with IndieWire, the independent cinema publication, TheWrap.com reported. The deal will see Thompson's blog promoted on the IndieWire network, which will also sell ads on the site.
