Los Angeles - Mail.com Media Corp. (MMC), the publisher of a network of entertainment-focused websites, announced on Tuesday that it has formed a joint venture with India-based media company Zee Entertainment Enterprises, to create a local portal on the domain India.com, PaidContent reported.

Google Deletes Long-running Music Blogs, Cites DMCA Notices

Mountain View, Calif. - Google (NASD: GOOG) has deleted several long-running music blogs hosted on its Blogger service without prior warning, citing multiple copyright infringement notices from record labels. The owners of Pop Tarts, Masala, I Rock Cleveland, To Die By Your Side, It's a Rap and Living Ears today found years of posts deleted with the following explanation from Google. "We'd like to inform you that we've received another complaint regarding your blog. Upon review of your account, we've noted that your blog has repeatedly violated Blogger's Terms of Service ... [and] we've been forced to remove your blog. Thank you for your understanding."

TechCrunch Fires Intern Who Sought Compensation for Coverage

Palo Alto, Calif. - Technology blog TechCrunch said that it has terminated an intern who asked for, and in at least one case received, compensation in exchange for including certain companies in articles. Founder and co-editor Michael Arrington said that the intern, who was not a full-time writer, asked for a Macbook Air in exchange for a post about a startup, and actually received a computer on another occasion. The blog has deleted all of the intern's posts.

HBO Plans Series on Female Showbiz Blogger; Nikki Finke?

Los Angeles - Time Warner's (NYSE: TWX) HBO has announced plans to develop a series about "a powerful female online showbiz journalist with a no-holds barred style," leading many to speculate the subject is Nikki Finke, the one-time LA Weekly columnist who started her own successful blog before being hired by Mail.com Media Corp. to run Deadline.com. Gawker contacted Finke for comment, who said she would be posting on the news on her own site shortly. The Hollywood Reporter, meanwhile, said HBO did not obtain Finke's life rights before moving forward with the project, and does not plan to work with her on the show.

SoundCloud, Hype Machine Team to Serve Music to Bloggers

London - SoundCloud, the provider of a music distribution platform for labels and artists, on Monday announced a partnership with music blog aggregator The Hype Machine. The deal will allow artists and labels to serve tracks directly to bloggers through SoundCloud, via embeddable SoundCloud players on their sites. The Hype Machine will detect these players across blogs that it aggregates, and allow tracks to be streamed on its own site. Artists and labels will then also be able to access data on the music, including number of plays and which blogs picked up their tracks. Initial partners include Domino Records and artists including Massive Attack.

Los Angeles - Mail.com Media Corporation, which publishes a network of websites including Movieline, Hollywood Life and Deadline, announced on Friday that Deadline.com's 1.11 million unique visitors in November surpassed the combined number of visitors to Variety.com (515,000) and HollywoodReporter.com (336,000) -- as well as their combined print circulations. Deadline.com was launched four years ago by veteran Hollywood reporter Nikki Finke.

Huffington Post Debuts Sponsored Comments, Tweets

New York - Blog network The Huffington Post has introduced the ability for advertisers to insert paid comments among readers' comments on stories, as well as to place paid tweets among the site's aggregated Twitter feeds, AdAge.com reports. The company will provide guidance to advertisers so that their messages are more well-received by the site's readership. "You cannot use the social engagement for the purposes of really hawking your products," Huffington Post president Greg Coleman told AdAge. "The advertiser is really put in a position where they need to add value to the conversation that's taking place."

TechCrunch Says CrunchPad Tablet PC Hits Dead End

Palo Alto, Calif. - Ten days after the scheduled debut of its tablet PC, technology blog TechCrunch said on Monday that its CrunchPad device, co-developed with Singapore-based Fusion Garage, has hit a legal dead end. "The entire project self destructed over nothing more than greed, jealousy and miscommunication," TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington wrote in a blog post.

New York - The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB), a consortium of top technology firms and advertisers, called on the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) this week to withdraw its new rules regarding disclosure of payments to bloggers for their coverage, arguing that "offline media have engaged [in such practices] for decades." The FTC last week set new guidelines concerning disclosures made in social media and on blogs where compensation has been given for an endorsement or testimonial.
