AOL Acquires Fantasy Football Site Fleaflicker

Dulles, Va. - AOL has paid an undisclosed sum to acquire New Jersey-based fantasy sports site Fleaflicker, which powers The Washington Post's fantasy football leagues, TechCrunch reported.

FantasyFishing.com to Offer Record $1 Million Payout

New York - FLW Outdoors on Wednesday announced the largest cash purse for an online fantasy sports competition, with a $1 million payout to the winner of FantasyFishing.com, The Wall Street Journal reported. The announcement was made by FLW chairman Irwin Jacobs, who owns boat maker Genmar Holdings. A test of the online fantasy fishing game last year drew several hundred thousand players. The game will not require a registration fee, but will charge $39.95 for supplemental information on "pro anglers, lake conditions and expert commentary."

Appeals Court Sides With Fantasy Games Over Baseball Players

St. Louis - The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit has refused to rehear an appeal of a ruling that said fantasy baseball game providers can use actual names and statistics on players in their games, the St. Louis Business Journal reports.

Liberty Media to Acquire FUN Technologies for $94 Million

Toronto - John Malone's Liberty Media (NASD: LINTA) said on Friday that it will acquire Toronto-based FUN Technologies, a provider of online casual and fantasy sports games and sports information, in a deal valued at about $94 million.

Saratoga, Calif. - Fantasy sports betting website NBX.com on Wednesday launched its latest game, College Bowl Perfect Picker, which will award $25,000 to anyone who correctly picks the winner of each college football bowl game. If multiple players pick every winning team, the prize will be shared equally among them.

Judge Rules Against MLB, Says Fantasy Sports Data is Public Domain

St. Louis - A federal judge has ruled against the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) and Major League Baseball Advanced Media (MLBAM), saying that baseball statistics are in the public domain and may be freely used by providers of fantasy sports games.

MLB.com Debuts New "Shuffle" Online Baseball Game

New York - MLB.com on Monday announced the launch of a new online baseball game, MLB.com Shuffle. Developed by Carlsbad, Calif.-based Sandcastle Studios, the game combines elements of a fantasy baseball game with a hold-and-draw card game, and can be played in five to ten minutes. A free trial is available on the site; unlimited use of the game costs $19.95.

Report: Fantasy Sports Sites Average 4.7 Million Users Monthly

Reston, Va. -- Over 7 million Americans -- or about 5% of all U.S. Internet users -- visited online fantasy sports websites in October, and an average of 4.7 million users monthly visit the fantasy sports sections on Yahoo, Sportsline and ESPN, according to data from comScore Media Metrix. Users spent an average of 93 minutes at these sites per month, and viewed an average of 219 pages. The report found that football is the most popular fantasy sports game, and that Yahoo Sports draws nearly three times the monthly audience of its nearest competitor, boasting 3.1 million users per month as compared to ESPN (950,000) and Sportsline (930,000).
