Dr. Dre, HP Collaborating on Premium Digital Music Line

San Francisco - HP (NYSE: HPQ) is preparing to launch a line of high-end laptops, headphones and software endorsed by hip-hop icon Dr. Dre, CNET News.com reported. Interscope Records chairman Jimmy Iovine confirmed that he and Dr. Dre were working with HP on "Beats by Dr. Dre," which aims to market high-quality sound to the mass market. "I just want our product to sound better," Iovine told CNET. "The record business committed many, many mistakes in the last 10 years, and I'm right in there. One of them was letting its product get degraded."

Somerville, Mass. - The Echo Nest, the provider of a "music intelligence" platform, on Wednesday announced the launch of its Fanalytics platform, which "applies patented Web crawling, machine learning and semantic Web technology to help artists and labels better understand, locate and build their online fan base." Initial customers include Universal's Interscope Records, Warner Music Group's Independent Label Group, Sony's RCA, and indie distributor The Orchard.

Interscope Artist Soulja Boy to Star in Animated Web Series

Los Angeles - Universal Music/Interscope Records on Tuesday said on Tuesday that it will launch an animated series featuring platinum-selling hip-hop artist Soulja Boy. The label tapped Buddy System Studios ("Robot Chicken") to produce the series, which will combine live action and animation and is set to debut in late January.

I know we should probably not look to the German music market as indicative of world taste, after all they love David Hasselhoff's odd baritone, but Universal Germany's teen band Tokio Hotel is an interesting phenomenon. They have sold nearly 3 million CDs and DVDs in their homeland in a time when kids get most of their music from the Internet. With four number one singles and two number one albums (the band members were between 13 and 15 years old when recorded their first album) they've become the biggest act to come out of Germany in 20 years.
