Santa Monica, Calif. - The World Championship Sports Network (WCSN), a channel devoted to major international sports competitions in events like track and field, gymnastics, fencing and rowing, announced on Tuesday that it has received an equity investment from Major League Baseball Advanced Media. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The online unit of Major League Baseball will manage WCSN's digital assets, and market the company's content to its database of 7 million baseball fans.

Germantown, Md. -- Current Communications Group, a provider of technology that delivers broadband Internet access through existing electrical outlets, said that it has raised an undisclosed amount of funding, including investments from investment banking firm Goldman, Sachs & Co., search engine giant Google and communications giant Hearst Corporation. The round also included investments from previous investors EnerTech Capital and Liberty Associated Partners, the company's principal stakeholder. Current said that it will use the additional capital to expand deployments in both the U.S. and abroad. The technology transforms existing electrical wiring into a secure broadband network.

Hong Kong -- DVN Holdings Limited, a Hong Kong-based maker of digital TV set-top boxes and middleware, announced on Tuesday that it has received an additional $7.5 million investment from a subsidiary of Illinois-based Motorola. DVN received a previous investment of $7.5 million from Motorola in June, 2004, and the company has an option to invest an additional $18 million. The proceeds will be used for research and development for application software and services, and for working capital. DVN expects its set-top box sales to grow, as the Chinese government has announced plans to migrate 30 million of the country's 100 million cable subscribers to digital within the next several years, with the analog service to be completely cut off by 2015.

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Chipmaker Intel announced that it has provided venture capital investments to three firms as part of its Intel Digital Home Fund, which aims to foster development of home networking technologies. The investments, the financial terms of which were not disclosed, were provided to Zinio Systems, a publisher of digital versions of newspapers; Synacor, a provider of syndicated online content for ISPs; and Gteko, a developer of automated technical support functions for home networking. "These new investments were made to support widespread adoption, use and sharing of digital entertainment and information - including music, games, news and video - among multiple devices in the home and elsewhere," said Intel Capital vice president Scott Darling. "We plan to continue to invest next year in companies that enable PC and CE devices to work together easily and in companies that deliver premium content services over IP networks."

Hong Kong -- Chinadotcom Corporation, an enterprise and mobile software developer, announced on Tuesday that it has made a $3.2 million investment in online game developer Beijing17game Network Technology (17game). The company's HongKong.com unit has also acquired a small minority interest in 17game, with the option to ultimately acquire 100% of the company. The funding will be used as working capital for 17game, which is currently developing "Travia," a 3D fantasy massively multiplayer online roleplaying game embedded with 3D EAX sound effects. The company expects to open beta testing in October and launch "Travia" by the end of the year.

San Francisco -- CNET News.com reported on Friday that Finnish cell phone giant Nokia has provided funding to the Mozilla Foundation, a developer of open-source Web browser software, earmarked for an open-source browser for cell phones. Terms of the funding were not disclosed, but the partnership has already produced a workable prototype called "Minimo." America Online spun off Mozilla as a nonprofit a year ago, providing $2 million in seed money. To this point, Nokia has used either an internally-developed browser or one made by Norway-based Opera in its cell phones, but the investment in the open-source Mozilla would mean freedom from associated licensing fees, as Mozilla software is made available for free to users.

Tokyo -- Sony Corporation and its game division, Sony Computer Entertainment, which manufactures distributes and markets the PlayStation game console, announced today that they will invest 200 billion yen ($1.7 billion) over the next three years to produce a new "super-chip" for next-generation game machines. Sony, which will manufacture the new chips in a semiconductor fabrication facility located in Japan, formed a partnership with Toshiba Corporation and IBM Corporation in August 2002 for the development of an advanced semiconductor process called the "Cell" project. "The introduction of advanced semiconductor technologies is imperative for the next generation processors that support the broadband network era," said Ken Kutaragi, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment and executive deputy president of Sony Corporation.
