iPod PhoneApple's Trademark of "Mobile Me" Hints at iPod Phone, Mobile ServicesAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on January 13, 2006 - 3:25am.
San Francisco - Apple has trademarked the phrase "Mobile Me," prompting some to speculate the company may be planning to introduce an iPod phone or other mobile content services, Reuters reported. "We believe this is further indication of (Apple's) strategic direction to extend its iPod + iTunes and Mac franchises into new business areas including smart phones, value-added mobile content services, and the broader consumer electronics space," said American Technology Research analyst Shaw Wu. The trademark application, filed on Jan. 5, covers areas including computing devices, mobile devices, and mobile services including digital music, video, games, e-mail, and messaging across Internet, intranets, extranets, television, cellular, and satellite networks. Apple recently partnered with Motorola to put its iTunes software onto cell phones, and some have speculated that Apple plans to become a mobile virtual network operator, leasing network space from an existing mobile network to sell as its own mobile phone service.
