Apple: App Store Counts 100,000 Apps, Hits 2 Billion Downloads

Cupertino, Calif. - Apple (NASD: AAPL) said on Wednesday that there are now more than 100,000 applications available for download by iPhone and iPod touch owners at its App Store. The company said that users from 77 countries have downloaded more than 2 billion apps since the store's inception.

Los Angeles - Apple (NASD: AAPL) plans to switch from using Microsoft Windows-based computers to register customers' checkout transactions in its retail stores to using its own iPod touch, Apple Insider reported. The device will be used to scan barcodes and swipe credit cards, while customers will sign for credit card purchases right on the iPod touch's screen, using the Pogo stylus accessory.

Report: New Apple iPod Touch to Include Microphone, Camera

San Francisco - Apple (NASD: AAPL) is designing an iPod touch with an on-board camera and microphone, Wired.com reported, citing a "well-connected" source who said the company's Chinese manufacturing partners are already churning out the devices. The article noted that, with the addition of Skype's Internet telephony application from Apple's App Store, the iPod touch "would pretty much obviate the need for a home phone line once and for all."

Apple: iPhone App Store Hits 1.5 Billion Downloads

Cupertino, Calif. - Apple (NASD: AAPL) said on Tuesday that customers have now downloaded more than 1.5 billion applications from its App Store in a year. The store, which works with Apple's iPhone and iPod touch devices, now includes more than 65,000 apps, with more than 100,000 developers in the company's iPhone Developer Program.

Reports: Next iPhone Will Include 802.11n, FM Transmitter

Cupertino, Calif. - Apple (NASD: AAPL) is expected to include a chip supporting the low-power 802.11n wireless standard on the next version of its iPod touch and iPhone, which would increase network speed and reception range, Apple Insider reported. The devices are also rumored to include an FM transmitter, which would allow streaming of songs directly to an FM radio, as well as reception of FM radio signals for music, sports and real-time traffic.

Cupertino, Calif. - Apple (NASD: AAPL) on Tuesday provided a sneak-peek at the upgrades coming this summer in the iPhone 3.0 software release, which will bring long-desired features like copy-and-paste of text, MMS multimedia messaging, and a search function that works across all applications. In addition to copy-and-paste and MMS, Apple will also introduce Spotlight for the iPhone, which will search through email, songs, text messages and other data on the device.

Sirius XM to Stream Satellite Radio to iPhones, iPods

Washington - Days after narrowly averting bankruptcy, satellite radio provider Sirius XM (NASD: SIRI) said on Thursday that it will try to boost its subscriber base by offering its services to owners of Apple's (NASD: AAPL) iPhone and iPod touch devices beginning this spring.

Amazon "Kindle" iPhone App Offers 240,000 E-books

Seattle - Online retailer Amazon.com (NASD: AMZN), which last week introduced the second iteration of its own e-book reader device, the Kindle 2, has released a new application for Apple's (NASD: AAPL) iPhone and iPod touch that lets owners of those devices purchase and download the library of over 240,000 e-books available from Amazon.com. The "Kindle" application, available from Apple's online App Store, also features Amazon's "Whispersync" technology, which saves and synchronizes a customer's bookmark across Kindle, Kindle 2, iPhone and iPod touch devices.

Cupertino, Calif. - Apple (NASD: AAPL) on Tuesday introduced new iPhone and iPod touch models with increased memory, including a 16GB iPhone ($499) and 32B iPod touch ($499). "For some users, there's never enough memory," said Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president of worldwide iPod and iPhone product marketing. "Now people can enjoy even more of their music, photos and videos on the most revolutionary mobile phone and best Wi-Fi mobile device in the world."

Well, you might be well advised to hold on to your old Blackberry for a few more months.
