Rhapsody, MTV to Host Preview of New Jay-Z Album

Seattle - RealNetworks (NASD: RNWK) and Viacom's (NYSE: VIA) MTV announced on Monday that their Rhapsody music service joint venture will exclusively preview Jay-Z's new album, "The Blueprint 3," for two weeks prior to its official release on Sept. 11. The preview stream will also be available from MTV's The Leak. Rhapsody will also be the exclusive retailer of the album from Sept. 8-10, and will host two exclusive bonus tracks

Jay-Z, Eminem to Feature in Special Edition of "DJ Hero" Game

Santa Monica, Calif. - Video game publisher Activision (NASD: ATVI) said this week that it will release a special branded edition of its forthcoming "DJ Hero" turntable-based music game featuring hip-hop artists Jay-Z and Eminem, who performed together onstage at an Activision party this week at E3 in Los Angeles. The special edition will include an advanced version of the game's turntable controller, a metal traveling case, and two exclusive music CD compilations featuring greatest hits and new mixes from each artist. Jay-Z and Eminem have also committed to providing fresh downloadable mixes for the game later this year.

U2, Madonna, Jay-Z Got Live Nation Equity Stakes in "360" Deals

Los Angeles - Concert promoter and venue owner Live Nation (NYSE: LYV) gave up equity stakes to performers including U2, Jay-Z and Madonna when it signed lucrative "360 deals" with them that includes recording, touring and merchandise, the Los Angeles Times reported, citing a regulatory filing.

Thumbplay Gets Exclusive Jay-Z Ringtones

New York - Mobile entertainment publisher Thumbplay announced that it has partnered with Universal Music Group to offer a suite of exclusive Jay-Z ringtones and other mobile content. The ringtones include ten singles not previously made available, including "Can I Get A," "Encore" and "IZZO (H.O.V.A.)."

Report: Jay-Z Near Closing $150 Million Deal with Live Nation

New York - Hip-hop artist and impresario Jay-Z is about to close a $150 million deal with concert promoter Live Nation (NYSE: LYV), that will see him leave longtime label Def Jam -- from which he stepped down as president last year -- and form a joint venture that will include recordings, tours, artist management and merchandise, The New York Times reported on Thursday. The deal follows Live Nation's announcement of a touring and merchandise deal with U2 on Monday, and the $120 million contract it signed with Madonna in 2007.

Jay-Z has (another) post-retirement album coming outThanks for the apology, Jay-Z, but we’re accustomed to stars (mostly athletes) retiring only to “give it one more try” less than a year later.  Although he’s hip-hop’s most notorious retiree (because he just can’t seem to follow through and actually retire), he now says he’s finished playing the game, as he says in XXL’s new issue.

Jay-Z to be Unlockable Character in Electronic Arts' "NBA Live 07"

Canton, Mass. - Electronic Arts has signed hip-hop artist and producer Jay-Z to appear as an unlockable character in its "NBA Live 07" title for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. As part of the deal, gamers who purchase Reebok's new S. Carter Basketball IV shoe at Champs Stores will receive a special code to unlock Jay-Z's character within the game. The rapper will also be available as a free agent to join teams in the game's Season and Dynasty modes.

Nokia Releases Jay-Z Phone Embedded With Rapper's New Album

Irving, Texas -- Cell phone maker Nokia announced on Tuesday that it partnered with hip-hop artist Jay-Z to create a special edition of the Nokia 3300 music phone called the Black Phone. The handset will come loaded with a multimedia card containing Jay-Z's recently released Black Album. The $124 music phone will also feature Jay-Z-themed ringtones and wallpapers, and will be sold at music retailers including Sam Goody and Media Play.
