Washington - In a major victory for the concept of "net neutrality," FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski on Monday outlined several actions he believes need to take place to "safeguard the free and open Internet," during a speech at The Brookings Institution. Genachowski proposed that the FCC, which previously had embraced four open Internet principles that guide its enforcement of communications law, add two new principles to that list.

FCC Launches New Blog Focused on National Broadband Plan

Washington - Hoping to spur conversation about its proposed National Broadband Plan, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has launched a new blog, known as Blogband. "The is one of the most important initiatives that the FCC has ever undertaken," wrote FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski in the initial post. "The feedback, ideas, and discussions generated on this blog will be critical in developing the best possible National Broadband Plan." The FCC plan, aimed at vastly increasing affordable access to high-speed Internet across the U.S., is due to Congress in 182 days. The FCC also has begun posting news and updates about the project on Twitter.

Julius Genachowski as New FCC Chair - What Will It Mean to Broadcasting's Future?

The press was abuzz yesterday with the news that Julius Genachowski is apparently the pick of the Obama Administration for the position of FCC Chairman.  Mr. Genachowski was at the FCC during the Reed Hundt Administration, and has since worked in the private sector in the telecommunications industry, including work with Barry Diller and running a DC-based venture capital fund.  From the positive reactions that the appointment has received from all quarters, the choice would seem to be a great one.  But, in looking at some of the reactions, you have to question whether everyone has to be reading what they want to see into the new Commission.

Google.org's Sonal Shah Named to Obama Transition Team

Mountain View, Calif. - Sonal Shah, who works on global development for Google's philanthropy division, Google.org, has been named to the transition team of President-elect Barack Obama, according to CNET News.com. Shah previously served as a vice president at Goldman Sachs. The Obama team also has recruited Julius Genachowski, one of the three co-founders of DC-based early stage investment firm LaunchBox Digital. According to The Washington Post, Genachowski attended law school with Obama, and helped stress the importance of high-tech issues during the campaign.
