Will Internet Radio Survive the Royalty Sting?

Radio Cartoon Things seem backward in Audio Entertainment (AE) World.  XM-Sirius (or Xirius, as Doc Searls called it in his blog) looks like it might fall apart because of…what?  FCC pride?  That’s one explanation.  They created a rule at satellite’s outset saying one entity couldn't own both licenses.  But the landscape has changed so much since then that it’s preposterous to believe a merged entity represents a real anti-competitive threat.  Now internet radio stations, per the infinite wisdom of the Copyright Royalty Board (CRB), will face a royalty fee per stream (yes, each stream), making business, as many of them know it, potentially impossible.

6 Audio Entertainment Sources Better Than XM-Sirius

Authored by Scott Goldberg on February 22, 2007 - 5:43pm.
Mic If the Department of Justice and the FCC allow the proposed XM-Sirius merger, the battle will be far from over.  Free internet radio is advancing at warp speed with thousands of sites offering new music and quality news.  MySpace is a legitimate source of free music and social entertainment.  Mobile phones are bridging the gap between listeners and diverse content forms, including music and games, more each day. And let’s not forget iTunes, with its handy Podcasts and cutting edge music catalogue, along with dozens of other digital music stores and their subscription offerings.  And we can’t leave out “illegal” file sharing sites, which still thrive.  In short, yes, XM-Sirius will put Howard & Oprah in the same room, and the NFL and NBA will finally join Major League Baseball on the same menu, but there will still be a lot to fight for.  Convincing customers to pay for XM-Sirius will continue to be difficult.  Here are 6 sources of audio entertainment better than XM-Sirius.

Buzz Watch: Nic Harcourt – The Human Recommendation Engine

Authored by Jay Baage on October 4, 2006 - 12:26pm.
From Digital Music Forum West 2006: Nic Harcourt, Music Director for KCRW and host of Morning Becomes Eclectic, articulates what many are thinking - the big record labels have themselves to blame for the current state of the music business, not just piracy: “What happened in the 90’s was that they pushed the alternative rock movement down our throats and then all these one-hit-wonders. They let the cat out of the bag. It is disingenuous of them to blame piracy for their problems.” He made the statement in a keynote interview with Ned Sherman, CEO and Publisher of Digital Media Wire, during “Digital Music Forum West” at the BelAge hotel in Los Angeles.

NPR Flagship Station KCRW to Offer "Podcasts" of Radio Programs

Authored by Mark Hefflinger on February 25, 2005 - 4:03am.
Santa Monica, Calif. -- KCRW, a flagship FM station for National Public Radio (NPR) based in Santa Monica, California, announced this week that it will begin "podcasting" its programming beginning on March 1. The free podcast service will enable owners of an Apple iPod or other MP3 player to go online and select KCRW programs to be automatically recorded on their computers and transferred to their portable players, for listening away from the radio or computer. "KCRW sees podcasting as a further extension of the radio station. The programs on our website have proven to be as popular as they are on the air; so it makes sense to allow more people to hear them, especially with the portability that podcasting offers -- it's KCRW To Go," said KCRW general manager Ruth Seymour. The station will offer 22 programs via podcast, including its nationally syndicated "Left, Right & Center," "To the Point," "Bookworm" and "The Treatment." The station has also partnered with WNYC in New York to cross promote and share podcast content online. KCRW said that copyright issues prevent it from offering music programs like its venerable "Morning Becomes Eclectic" via podcast, "but efforts are underway to make this possible in the future," the station said.
