Guns N' Roses Uploader Gets Probation; Will Star in PSAs

Los Angeles - Blogger Kevin Cogill, who was convicted of misdemeanor copyright infringement after admitting to posting tracks from the then-unreleased Guns N' Roses album "Chinese Democracy" online, has been sentenced to two months of home confinement and a year of probation, the Associated Press reported. Prosecutors had initially sought a six-month prison term and a fine of $371,000; the maximum sentence for the crime is a year in prison.

Los Angeles - The federal prosecutors handling the case against Kevin Cogill, who posted tracks from the new Guns N' Roses album "Chinese Democracy" to his website Antiquiet before its commercial release, are seeking a six-month prison term on the one misdemeanor count of pre-release piracy he faces, Wired.com reported. The government also calculated that Cogill should owe damages of $371,622, based on estimates it made on how many times the tracks were downloaded as a result of the leak; the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), which has been pushing the case, itself estimated damages of $2.2 million.

Los Angeles - A blogger who posted nine unreleased songs from rock band Guns N' Roses' 14-years-in-the-making "Chinese Democracy" album was arrested at his home in Los Angeles on Wednesday morning, on suspicion of violating federal copyright laws, the Los Angeles Times reported. Kevin Cogill, a 27-year-old who operates the blog Antiquiet, posted the songs online in June, but removed them shortly thereafter following a reported request from the band.
