Kodak Details Plans to Enter Mobile Device Photo Market

Rochester, N.Y. - Eastman Kodak Co. (NYSE: EK) announced that it is entering the imaging technology market for mobile devices. "There are more than 600 million digital images captured each day, and more and more photos are being taken with mobile devices," said John Blake, general manager of digital capture and imaging devices group, and vice president of Eastman Kodak Co. "KODAK Imaging Technology addresses the three main issues that frustrate consumers about these shots - poor image quality, difficulty transferring images off their mobile devices, and the inability to easily share images with family and friends."

Kodak to Power Digital Cinema for Santikos Theatres

Hollywood - Kodak (NYSE: EK) announced on Friday that San Antonio-based Santikos Theatres will install Kodak Digital Cinema systems at 126 of its screens. The theater chain is the first to select Kodak for a circuit-wide digital cinema deployment.

Los Angeles - Kodak Digital Cinema announced that it has partnered with National CineMedia (NCM), a joint venture between a number of theater owners that develops pre-feature advertising and entertainment, to develop digital cinema theater management software.

Hollywood - Paramount Pictures said on Monday that it partnered with Kodak Digital Cinema to handle the preparation and distribution of its "Mission Impossible: III" to more than 170 digital cinema screens in North America. Paramount said the film is now playing on more than a third of all digital-equipped screens in North America.

Orlando, Fla. - Photography giants Fuji, Konica Minolta and Eastman Kodak announced on Wednesday a new technology standard designed to ensure that digital photos and video can be shared across a broad range of consumer products. The "Everplay" standard addresses differences between methods used to organize and preserve digital images developed separately over the years. The three companies said they will adopt the Everplay standard in their own products, and have begun a free license program to encourage all consumer digital imaging companies to adopt the standard.

Kodak, Barco to Jointly Market Digital Cinema Projectors

Los Angeles -- Two providers of digital cinema projection systems -- Eastman Kodak and Barco -- announced on Wednesday they have teamed to market and sell each others' technologies. While Kodak provides digital cinema systems to theaters for pre-show use, Barco is one of three licensees of Texas Instruments' DLP Cinema technology and has installed nearly 200 of its digital projectors for movie theater screens worldwide. In addition to selling and marketing each others' products, Kodak and Barco will also collaborate on service and support, and systems development. "In North America, we believe the partnership will provide an enhanced digital cinema solution for our studio, postproduction, feature film, and exhibition customers by offering Kodak's service network, systems integration, and support infrastructure along with Barco's digital projection solutions," said Barco Digital Cinema executive vice president Scott Spector.

Kodak Expands Digital Cinema System to Feature-Length Films

Orlando, Fla. -- Eastman Kodak on Monday introduced its first system for the digital projection of full-length feature films, which uses proprietary Kodak software and the company's CineServer equipment. Kodak said commercial versions will be available worldwide beginning early next year. The company also said that Cinema Screen Media has purchased an additional 200 Kodak Digital Cinema advertising systems, which provide pre-movie digital ads in theaters. "We began our efforts in digital cinema by becoming a leading provider of systems that manage and project pre-show advertising. Now we're introducing systems that will allow exhibitors to manage and show full-length feature films," said Kodak senior vice president Eric Rodli.

Kodak, Movie Tunes to Screen Weekly Music Concerts in Digital Theaters

Las Vegas -- Eastman Kodak, which distributes its own digital cinema projection system, announced on Tuesday that it has partnered with Studio City, Calif.-based Movie Tunes to offer alternative content like music concerts on theater screens equipped with Kodak's digital system. Movie Tunes will provide a new hour-long "Music Scene" program -- targeted at teens and featuring developing bands -- to Kodak each week, which Kodak will then distribute to its digital theaters during prime time every night during the summer. Kodak will install four new systems in Carmike Cinemas locations in connection with the program, which the company plans to extend more widely in the fall if the current test is successful.

Kodak Introduces Glasses-Less 3D Imaging Display for Games, Science

Rochester, N.Y. -- Imaging giant Kodak on Monday announced its Stereoscopic Imaging Display, a display device that creates glasses-less 3D images targeted primarily at the video game, science/medical industries. "Unlike other 3D imaging systems, which rely on a barrier screen placed over an existing monitor, the Kodak display is an entirely new concept," said Lawrence Henderson, vice president and director of new business ventures for Eastman Kodak Company. "Kodak's Stereoscopic Imaging Display system maintains full image resolution and creates a very wide field of view." The company is currently seeking partners and early-stage customers for the system, and will provide licenses to the technology for integration into third-party products and systems.

Kodak Acquires 2 Digital Printing Firms; Sues Sony for Patent Infringement

Rochester, N.Y. -- Photo giant Eastman Kodak stepped up its move into the digital market yesterday when it acquired two digital printing companies owned by the German firm Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG for a combined $150 million. The two companies, NexPress Solutions and Heidelberg Digital, manufacture digital color and black-and-white printers. Separately, Kodak announced it has filed patent infringement claims against rival camera maker Sony, alleging the company is infringing on 10 of its patents covering digital photography technology. The suit seeks an injunction against further sale of the allegedly infringing products and unspecified monetary damages. "We have attempted to resolve the matter with Sony for almost three years, and the discussion between us have not led to a suitable licensing agreement," Kodak spokesman Gerard Meuchner told Reuters. Sony said it had not yet seen the suit and had no comment.

Kodak to End Sales of Film-Based Cameras in U.S.

Rochester, N.Y. -- In a sure sign that digital photography is eroding market share from its traditional film-based counterpart, photography equipment giant Eastman Kodak has announced that it will cease selling film-based cameras in the U.S., Canada and Western Europe by the end of the year. The company said it will still manufacture and sell film cameras in more lucrative emerging markets such as China, India, Eastern Europe and Latin America.
