Report: U.S. Game Sales Up 53% in June to $1.69 Billion

Port Washington, N.Y. - U.S. video game sales were up 53% in June from a year ago, to $1.69 billion, and although Sony (NYSE: SNE) got a major bump in sales via the top-selling, PlayStation 3-exclusive "Metal Gear Solid 4," Nintendo once again led with sales of 666,000 Wii consoles during the month, according to sales data compiled by market research firm NPD Group. Konami's "Metal Gear Solid 4" led overall with sales of 775,000 units, helping spike PlayStation 3 sales by 94% month-over-month to 405,000 units; Microsoft's (NASD: MSFT) Xbox 360 sold 219,800 units in June.

Konami Sues "Rock Band" Maker Harmonix Over Game Patents

Tokyo - Japanese video game developer and publisher Konami has filed suit against Viacom-owned (NYSE: VIA) "Rock Band" game developer Harmonix, alleging the popular music game infringes on several of Konami's patents, Bloomberg reported.

Konami to Publish "Rock Revolution" Music Game

El Segundo, Calif. - Video game publisher Konami this week announced plans to publish "Rock Revolution," a title similar to the megahits Guitar Hero and Rock Band, for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii and DS in the fall. Konami, which has scored with earlier music titles like "Dance Dance Revolution," said that the new title, designed by musicians, will feature "the most realistic drum peripheral on the market" as well as both disc-based and downloadable songs.

Zannel Launches Mobile Social Networking Service

Menlo Park, Calif. - Zannel on Wednesday announced the launch of its mobile social networking service, which lets users create and share content on any mobile device across multiple networks. The company counts 1,500 content partners, including Konami, the X Prize Foundation and Warner Bros. Pictures, who are distributing their content through Zannel. Menlo Park, Calif.-based Zannel raised $6 million in its first round of funding in June 2006 from Palomar Ventures and U.S. Ventures.

Sony in Talks for Movie Rights to Konami's "Metal Gear Solid" Game

Los Angeles - Sony's Columbia Pictures is in talks to acquire the motion picture rights to Japanese developer Konami's "Metal Gear Solid" video game, which to date has generated more than $1 billion and 20 million unit sales, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Va. - Children who consistently play Konami's "Dance Dance Revolution" (DDR) dance-based video game have shown improvements in health, attitude and behavior, according to a study conducted by West Virginia Games for Health, a research project of West Virginia University and the West Virginia Public Employees Insurance Agency.

Tokyo - Japanese video game publisher Konami has settled a lawsuit it filed against fellow developer Roxor, over that company's alleged trademark infringement of Konami's "Dance Dance Revolution" game with its own "In the Groove" dance game, GamesIndustry.biz reported. Under terms of the settlement, Konami has acquired the intellectual property rights to "In the Groove," while Roxor has pledged to respect Konami's intellectual property rights in the future.

Konami: "Frogger" Mobile Games Hit $10 Million in U.S. Sales

Los Angeles - Japanese video game publisher Konami has sold the animation rights to its "Castlevania" game franchise to Project 51 Productions, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Konami's "Castlevania" franchise has shipped over 20 million units since its U.S. debut in 1987 for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Project 51 said that potential productions include theatrical features, direct-to-video films and a TV series.

GameTap Adds Konami Titles to Subscription Games Service

Atlanta - GameTap, the subscription games and entertainment service from Turner Broadcasting, announced on Monday that it has signed a licensing agreement with Japanese game developer Konami. Redwood City, Calif. - Japanese video game publisher Konami on Wednesday announced a three-year partnership with the state of West Virginia, which will bring its "Dance Dance Revolution" dancing-based video game to all 765 of its public schools. "Addressing childhood obesity is among the top priorities of Governor Manchin's administration," said Nidia Henderson, wellness director of the West Virginia Public Employees Insurance Agency. "DDR offers West Virginia a unique opportunity to turn 'screen time' into active time while allowing children residing in even the most rugged terrain an opportunity for physical activity." The state, which found in a "Games for Health" research project that games improved children's levels of physical activity, intends to develop a school-based DDR curriculum and collect data to analyze the benefits of the game's use in schools. "This first-of-its-kind partnership will help us continue to demonstrate the benefits of DDR to consumers around the country," said Clara Gilbert, director of business partnerships for Konami Digital Entertainment.

Redwood City, Calif. - Japanese video game developer Konami's U.S. unit announced on Wednesday that it has partnered with the 24 Hour Fitness chain of fitness clubs, which will add the company's "Dance Dance Revolution" games to its Kids' Clubs nationwide. The Japanese arcade game was released for PlayStation in the U.S. in 2000; "Dance Dance Revolution" has sold 7.5 million units worldwide since its original release in 1998. It has also been introduced into the physical fitness curriculum in numerous U.S. school districts. "By placing DDR in 24 Hour Fitness locations we strive to help kids and adults achieve their fitness goals in an unintimidating and fun way," said Clara Gilbert, director of business partnerships at Konami Digital Entertainment America. As part of the agreement, Konami will include 30-day free memberships to 24 Hour Fitness along with retail copies of "Dance Dance Revolution Extreme 2" for PlayStation 2, and "Dance Dance Revolution Ultramix 3" for Xbox.
