NBC Universal, PE Firms to Acquire The Weather Channel

New York - Landmark Communications announced that it has agreed to sell The Weather Channel to a group made up of NBC Universal (NYSE: GE) and the private equity firms of The Blackstone Group and Bain Capital. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but sources familiar with the deal said the price was "just under $3.5 billion," according to a report by Reuters.

Atlanta - Time Warner (NYSE: TWX) is competing with a rival group led by NBC Universal (NYSE: GE), Blackstone Group and Bain Capital to acquire Atlanta-based Weather Channel from Landmark Communications, according to a report by Reuters on Friday.

New York - Media company Landmark Communications is putting its Weather Channel TV network and website up for sale, and could draw more than $5 billion at auction, The New York Times reported, citing people briefed on the auction. Suitors reportedly include NBC, News Corp. and Comcast.

Atlanta - Digital Envoy, a developer of Internet Protocol (IP) intelligence and geolocation technology, has been acquired by Landmark Communications, a privately held media company that owns newspapers, TV stations and various websites.
