Vancouver, Canada - Destiny Media Technologies on Thursday launched Canada's first online commercial music service, the Promo Only Digital Download Service (PODDS), which will deliver tracks to radio disc jockeys and other commercial establishments. The service is the first to be approved by the Canadian Audio-Video Licensing Agency, which represents Universal, Warner Music and EMI in Canada. Aside from PODDS, it is not legal for DJs to rip CDs to a computer or use consumer download services to source music for public performance. In addition to new singles, PODDS will offer rare remixes, extended mixes and other content from major and indie labels.

New York - eMusic, the second most-popular digital music service in the U.S., announced on Tuesday the launch of its service in all 25 European Union member countries. New York-based eMusic offers a catalog of 1.7 million tracks from 8,500 independent labels in the unprotected MP3 format, meaning songs can play on any MP3 player, including Apple's iPod. "The monopoly of iTunes in Europe is over," said eMusic president and CEO David Pakman. "European consumers, fed up with homogeneous music and services focused only on mainstream pop can now discover a wealth of music created to transcend rules, boundaries and commercialism. At eMusic, fans can explore our vast catalogue of groundbreaking independent music which plays on any digital music device." The European eMusic stores will offer three subscription plans: 40 downloads per month for 12.99 euro ($16.48); 65 downloads per month for 16.99 euro ($21.55); or 90 downloads per month for 20.99 euro ($26.62), which breaks down to about 29 cents per song. The company said it will market the service with Classic FM, The Guardian and Stuff magazine in the U.K., and will bundle free downloads with MP3 players sold at High Street retailers.

Listeners may now search, browse and buy music they hear on the radio or online directly from ether site. "We will have full control of the storefront itself," said Rey Mena, vice president of Emmis Interactive. "Therefore, we can feature any artist we want to feature. Since each storefront represents Power 106 and HOT 97's playlists, they will feature what is relevant to their listeners. New York - MTV on Wednesday launched a public beta test and two-week free trial of its Microsoft-powered Urge digital music service. Featuring 2 million tracks licensed from MusicNet, Urge offers 99 cent a la carte downloads, a $9.95 streaming subscription plan, and a $14.95 subscription that allows unlimited downloads to compatible devices. Other features of the service include 130 streaming radio stations; "super playlists", which contain hundreds of songs in a given genre; "feeds", where users can sign up for updated playlists in certain genres and sync them to portable players; and "auto mixes", or automatically generated playlists built around specific artists or music styles selected by users.
