Staff of Washington Blade to Launch "Modest" Publication Friday

Washington - Just days after the Washington Blade ceased publication, several former employees of the 40-year-old gay and lesbian newspaper said that they plan to launch a new, more modest version of the paper on Friday.

Washington - Gay and lesbian adults are more likely than heterosexuals to read blogs and use social networking tools, according to a new poll conducted by Harris Interactive in conjunction with Witeck-Combs Communications.

Los Angeles - For the first time in the franchise, virtual characters of the same sex in Electronic Arts' (NASD: ERTS) "The Sims 3" will be able to marry one another, AfterElton.com reports. In the original "The Sims" title, gay couples could only live together in virtual houses. The release of "The Sims 2" in 2004 added the ability for gay Sims to be "joined," and receive the same functions of marriage in the game, aside from the name. With "The Sims 3," gay and lesbian Sims characters now enjoy full marriage equality.

New York - Video game publisher Take-Two Interactive (NASD: TTWO) has announced that one of the next expansion packs for its blockbuster "Grand Theft Auto" franchise will be entitled "Grand Theft Auto: The Ballad of Gay Tony." "As Luis Lopez, part-time hoodlum and full-time assistant to legendary nightclub impresario Tony Prince (aka "Gay Tony"), players will struggle with the competing loyalties of family and friends, and with the uncertainty about who is real and who is fake in a world in which everyone has a price."

Tennessee Schools Filtering Pro-Gay Sites; ACLU Threatens Suit

San Francisco - The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has threatened to sue public schools in Tennessee for using Internet filtering software to block websites that discuss lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues, while allowing visits to sites that actively advocate against homosexuality, Wired.com reported.

Amazon: Error That De-Ranked LGBT Books is Fixed

Seattle - Amazon.com (NASD: AMZN) said on Monday that a "ham-fisted cataloging error" caused thousands of gay-themed books to be classified as "adult" literature and de-ranked from its online store, the Seattle Times reports. "This is an embarrassing and ham-fisted cataloging error for a company that prides itself on offering complete selection," Drew Herdener, communications director at Amazon, told the Times.

eHarmony Settles Discrimination Suit; Will Add Gay Dating Site

New York - Internet dating site eHarmony.com said on Wednesday that it has settled a discrimination lawsuit in New Jersey, and will begin accepting personal ads from gays and lesbians for the first time. A New Jersey man sued the eight-year-old company in 2005 after it rejected his personal ad; the company did not previously accept any ads from gay people.

Live Nation Donates $50,000 to Defeat Gay Marriage Ban in Calif.

Sacramento, Calif. - Concert promoter and live venue owner Live Nation (NYSE: LYV) announced on Friday that it has donated $50,000 to the No on Prop. 8 campaign in California, which is fighting to defeat the ballot measure that would eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry in the state.

Google Takes Stance Against Anti-Gay Marriage Ban in Calif.

Mountain View, Calif. - In a statement that notes the company "[does] not generally take a position on issues outside of our field, especially not social issues," Google (NASD: GOOG) has taken an official stance opposing California's Proposition 8, which would eliminate the California Supreme Court-sanctioned right of same-sex couples to get married in the state. "It is the chilling and discriminatory effect of the proposition on many of our employees that brings Google to publicly oppose Proposition 8," Google co-founder and president Sergey Brin wrote in a post on the company's official blog. "While we respect the strongly-held beliefs that people have on both sides of this argument, we see this fundamentally as an issue of equality. We hope that California voters will vote no on Proposition 8 -- we should not eliminate anyone's fundamental rights, whatever their sexuality, to marry the person they love."

Habbo to Host Teen Talks with Matthew Shepard Foundation

Los Angeles - Habbo, a virtual community for teens that recently surpassed 100 million avatars created by its users, has announced a partnership with the non-profit Matthew Shepard Foundation, which was founded by the mother of 21-year-old murdered in an anti-gay hate crime in 1998. The foundation will host an ongoing series of conversations within the virtual world, on topics including "how to deal with bullying, discrimination and hate experienced on and offline and how to encourage respect among peers."

"Stonewall Brawl" Game Commemorates Gay Rights Milestone

Los Angeles - Gay cartoonist Eric Orner and Jay Laird, a developer with Metaversal Studios, have teamed to create an online Flash game based on the historic 1969 Stonewall riots -- which are often cited as the origin of the gay rights movement in the U.S., GayGamer.net reported. San Francisco - Gay magazine publisher PlanetOut, whose publications include The Advocate and Out, on Tuesday announced the launch of a new digital delivery system that will give subscribers the additional option of receiving magazine issues electronically. The company did not name a distribution partner, but said the digital versions are identical to the print editions and are viewable with a free player.
