Lawmaker Plans File-Sharing Bill to Prevent Data Leaks

Washington - A U.S. House Democrat said at a hearing on Wednesday that he plans to introduce a bill that would limit the use of peer-to-peer file-sharing applications on government computers, CNET News.com reported. After hearing testimony that Secret Service safehouse locations, evacuation plans for the first lady, and IRS tax returns may still be found on file-sharing networks, Rep. Edolphus Towns (D-N.Y.) announced plans for the legislation.

Lime Wire Store to Stock CD Baby Digital Catalog

New York - Lime Wire, a provider of peer-to-peer file-sharing software and an online media store, announced on Wednesday that it has partnered with online CD retailer CD Baby. Under the deal, the LimeWire Store will now sell CD Baby's digital catalog, boosting its library to over 3.5 million songs. CD Baby offers recordings from over 240,000 artists.

House Hearing Will Address Bill on Inadvertent File-Sharing

Washington - The U.S. House Energy subcommittee will hold a hearing tomorrow on a bill that would require distributors of peer-to-peer software to provide repeated notices to users about the sharing of files from their computers, CNET News.com reported.

LimeWire Store Adds Tracks from The Orchard

New York - Lime Wire, the distributor of peer-to-peer file-sharing software that also now operates a DRM-free music download store, announced that it has added the catalog of digital music distributor The Orchard (NASD: ORCD) to its LimeWire Store, which now offers over 2 million MP3 tracks for purchase and download. The LimeWire Store also offers licensed tracks from Redeye Distribution, Nettwerk Music Group, IRIS and others.

Lawmakers Call Peer-to-Peer Technology "National Security Threat"

Washington - Several lawmakers on Tuesday called peer-to-peer networks a potential "national security threat," as some users may, and in some cases have, inadvertantly made sensitive or classified documents on their computers available for sharing with others, CNET News.com reported.
