Yahoo Consortia Working on Used Cars Portal

The newspaper consortia (“the amigos”) that teamed up with Yahoo for HotJobs is planning to invade used autos next, according to a post by newspaper insider Ken Doctor. If it pans out, such an alliance would probably signal that Yahoo’s 2005 deal with AutoTrader for listings will soon be over.

FAST put on its own kind of MacWorld this week in San Diego, evangelizing the way to its “enterprise search” solutions for every kind of customer, including major local players such as Media News Group, The Washington Post, InfoSpace, Scandinavian publishing giant Schipsted, and the online directory efforts from Deutsche Telekom and Portugal Telecom. The event, attracting about 800 – double last year’s count — was one of the most interesting I’ve been to for a while.

Krillion, a startup with deep pockets from Hummer Winblad, launched the first iteration of its “localized search engine” today. The highly attractive, ad-supported service is kicking off with a dedicated appliance search. The next wave of localized searches will include seasonal appliances, consumer electronics, and lawn & garden.

I’m a little late on this, as we approach the football playoffs, but Miller Beer has been targeting local consumers this season by providing local team content and commentary on its MillerLite website, while linking to the teams’ websites. The Miller efforts is part of a broader tie-in with the NFL, wrapped around its Very Important Beer Drinker (V.I.B.) campaign.

Citysearch to Power Local Content for InterActiveCorp's AskCity

West Hollywood, Calif. - InterActiveCorp's Citysearch online city guide service announced on Friday that it will serve as the core local content provider for Ask.com's new local search service, AskCity. Citysearch includes editorial and user reviews on over 12 million local businesses nationwide. Ask.com is also a unit of InterActiveCorp.

NAVTEQ to Acquire DC-Based Map Network for $37.5 Million

Washington - NAVTEQ, a Chicago-based producer of digital maps for vehicle navigation and location-based devices, said on Wednesday that it will pay $37.5 million in cash to acquire The Map Network, a DC-based producer of maps for travel destinations, special events and major hotels.

Oodle Launches Local Classifieds Search Engine in 23 New Markets

San Mateo, Calif. - Oodle, a search engine for local classifieds, said on Tuesday that it has launched in 23 new markets, including such cities as Baltimore, Charlotte, Las Vegas, Orlando and Pittsburgh. The company now operates in 49 metro areas.

Google Local Integrates Google Maps Service

Mountain View, Calif. - Google on Thursday officially launched its Google Local service, having merged the technologies behind its Google Local and Google Maps services. Google Local will offer information such as integrated local search results, Yellow Page directories, and driving directions that include Google's satellite imagery. "Users will be able to go to one location to find all the local and mapping information they need," said Marissa Mayer, Google director of consumer Web products. "Whether it's directions to the nearest pharmacy or reviews of nearby dim sum restaurants, we will continue to develop innovative technologies that enrich our users' lives."

AOL Launches Local Search Service

Dulles, Va. -- Keeping pace with search rivals Yahoo and Google, America Online on Thursday launched a new local search service, available to both subscribers and non-subscribers. The service, known as AOL Local Search, aggregates content from AOL's Yellow Pages and CityGuide, as well as the company's Moviefone and MapQuest services and content from outside partners. "Local search is an important and growing category of search services given that 20% of all online look-ups are for something nearby," said Jim Riesenbach, the senior vice president of AOL search and directional media. The service is designed to help users find local businesses, events, movies and other information.

Yahoo Launches Local Search Engine Service

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Yahoo on Tuesday launched a test of a new local search engine service, which will offer advertisers the opportunity to target users searching for local businesses. The company cited Kelsey Group data indicating that as many as one in four of all Internet searches have a local intent. The local search service will index the 14 million businesses found on Yahoo's Yellow Pages listings, and allow users to search by zip code and provide reviews and ratings for local businesses. Yahoo rival Google launched a similar local search service in March.
