"Lord of the Rings" Console Game Rights Revert to Warner Bros.

Los Angeles - Electronic Arts (NASD: ERTS) is no longer the holder of the "Lord of the Rings" game rights, as Warner Bros.' (NYSE: TWX) New Line has apparently not extended a contract with the publisher that was set to expire at the end of 2008, Variety reported. EA has held the license since 2001. Warner Bros. is also holds a stake in Turbine, developer of "Lord of the Rings Online," and may look to move development of console games based on the franchise in-house now as well.

Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema (NYSE: TWX) finally reached an agreement to make J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit," a prequel to the blockbuster trilogy "The Lord of the Rings." While it appears that the parties have settled their longtime blood fued over Lord of the Rings' royalties, the announcement today is that Jackson will NOT direct "The Hobbit", but serve as "Executive Producer" together with his on- and offscreen partner Fran Walsh. So how significant is that little detail?

CDC Games to Distribute "Lord of the Rings" Online Game in China

Beijing - CDC Games, a unit of the company that operates Chinese Web portal China.com, announced on Tuesday an agreement with game developer Turbine, to distribute "The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar" in China. The game is slated to launch in the U.S. and Europe in 2007, and has attracted 200,000 beta participants. Beijing-based CDC Games also operates the online game "Yulgang," which exceeded 30 million registered players in the second quarter.

Electronic Arts Developing 6 Wii Titles, New "Lord of the Rings" Game

Redwood City, Calif. - Electronic Arts on Thursday announced the development of six new titles for the forthcoming Nintendo Wii game console, including new releases from its Madden NFL, Need for Speed, Harry Potter, Tiger Woods PGA Tour, SSX and The Godfather franchises.

Redwood City, Calif. - Electronic Arts on Friday announced plans to ship its "The Lord of the Rings, The Battle for Middle-earth II" title for Xbox 360 this summer. Developed at EA Los Angeles of the same name, the Xbox 360 version of the original PC game will feature online play through Microsoft's Xbox Live service.

Electronic Arts Signs Hugo Weaving to Voice "Lord of the Rings" Game

Redwood City, Calif. - Electronic Arts said on Thursday that it has signed actor Hugo Weaving as lead voiceover talent for its "The Lord of the Rings, The Battle for Midde-earth II" PC game. Weaving played elf leader Lord Elrond in the New Line Cinema film trilogy, as well as Agent Smith in the "Matrix" trilogy. EA added that John Howe, a concept artist who worked on the film trilogy, has joined its design team for the game.

Electronic Arts Ships New "Harry Potter," "Lord of the Rings" Games

Redwood City, Calif. - Electronic Arts on Tuesday announced the release of its "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" title for PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, PC, Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS. Developed by EA's UK studio, the game is being launched in conjunction with the release of Warner Bros. Pictures' film based on the J.K. Rowling novel, and features the voice and likeness of actor Ralph Fiennes, who plays Lord Voldemort in the film. Separately, EA said it shipped its "The Lord of the Rings: Tactics" title for Sony PSP. The game is EA's first to incorporate the company's exclusive rights to develop games based directly on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien; previous EA "Lord of the Rings" games have been based solely on content from New Line Cinema's film trilogy.

Redwood City, Calif. -- Video game publisher Electronic Arts announced on Monday that it has secured additional rights from Tolkien Enterprises to develop games based on author J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings." To this point, EA had only secured rights to develop titles based on director Peter Jackson's film trilogy adaptation of the novels; the new games will include characters, environments and battles not depicted in the films. Redwood City, Calif.-based Electronic Arts said it will release "The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II" for PC and "The Lord of the Rings: Tactics" for Sony PSP based on the new license.
