Adobe Receives Emmy Award for Flash Video Technology

San Jose, Calif. - Adobe Systems said on Thursday that it has won a Technical and Engineering Emmy Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for its Flash Video technology.

Adobe, Verizon Wireless Bringing Flash to Cell Phones

San Jose, Calif. - Adobe Systems has announced that it partnered with Verizon Wireless to develop a version of its Flash animation software for mobile phones. The companies did not say when Verizon phones with embedded Flash technology would come to market. NTT DoCoMo and other Japanese carriers already support Flash, but Verizon is Adobe's first U.S. network partner. Pacific Crest research analyst Steve Lidberg told Reuters that Adobe's deals with U.S. carriers could result in another million developers using Flash, which in turn could generate a windfall of about $1 billion for the company.

U.S., European Regulators Approve $3.4 Billion Merger of Adobe, Macromedia

San Francisco - Adobe Systems, a developer of multimedia design software, announced that its proposed $3.4 billion merger with fellow design software maker Macromedia has passed all regulatory hurdles, and will close on Dec. 3. European regulators recently approved the deal; the U.S. Justice Department had already granted its approval, following a request for additional information from the companies. The deal will unite the makers of the widely utilized Photoshop and Illustrator (Adobe), and Flash and DreamWeaver (Macromedia) applications.

Macromedia Completes Acquisition of Mobile Innovation

Bracknell, England - Macromedia, the distributor of media software including Flash, announced that it has completed its acquisition of Mobile Innovation, a U.K.-based user interface (UI) designer, developer and integrator for mobile devices. Macromedia said the acquisition would strengthen its ability to develop new mobile applications and content built on the Flash Platform. The company also said that Mobile Innovation would be integrated into the Macromedia Consulting team, led by Peter Lelliott, and that Mobile Innovation co-founder and chief technology officer Matt Millar would head the Mobile and Devices practice in the EMEA region. Financial terms for the deal were not disclosed.

Shareholders of Adobe and Macromedia Approve Merger Agreement

San Jose, Calif. -- The shareholders of both San Jose-based Adobe Systems and San Francisco-based Macromedia, Inc. have voted to approve Adobe's proposed $3.4 billion acquisition of Macromedia. Under the acquisition agreement, shareholders of Macromedia will receive 1.38 shares of Adobe for each share of Macromedia they own. Adobe launched the takeover of Macromedia in April.

Cisco, Macromedia Invest $4 Million in Mobile Game Publisher Indiagames

Hong Kong -- Chinese wireless Internet firm TOM Online announced on Friday that Cisco and Macromedia have made a combined $4 million strategic investment in its mobile game publishing subsidiary, Indiagames. Following the transaction, Cisco and Macromedia will own 18% of Indiagames, while TOM Online's stake in the company will drop from 76% to 62%. Founded in 1999, the India-based company has distribution agreements for its games with over 100 wireless carriers, including Orange, Verizon, Sprint, Singtel, Airtel and Vodafone. As part of the deal, Indiagames will now also publish all of its titles on Macromedia's Flash Lite platform. "We now have Chinese, Indian and American investors, all leaders in their respective verticals," said Indiagames CEO Vishal Gondal. "This combination is really very unique and will surely help accelerate our global growth plans, keeping us on the cutting edge of mobile, broadband and Internet technology."

Adobe Systems Acquires Macromedia in $3.4 Billion Stock Deal

San Jose, Calif. -- In a massive merger that will create new competition for Microsoft, Adobe Systems, a provider of publishing and Web software including Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat, announced on Monday that it will acquire Macromedia, developer of the Flash format, in an all-stock deal valued at $3.4 billion. The combined company will be able to offer media firms and other businesses a full suite of applications for creating rich media content for the Web and other platforms. "Customers are calling for integrated software solutions that enable them to create, manage and deliver a wide range of compelling content and applications -- from documents and images to audio and video," said Adobe CEO Bruce Chizen. "By combining our powerful development, authoring and collaboration software -- along with the complementary functionality of PDF and Flash -- Adobe has the opportunity to bring this vision to life with an industry-defining technology platform." The deal is expected to close in the fall of 2005.

Macromedia Partners with AOL to Create IM Software

San Francisco -- America Online has partnered with San Francisco-based Web publishing software firm Macromedia to develop technology that programmers can use to create software for AOL's instant messaging platform. Macromedia, best known as the developer of Flash animation technology, also is the creator of Macromedia Central, a program that lets users interact with information and software delivered over the Internet. Through the partnership, the companies have opened the door for potentially hundreds of thousands of Flash developers to build applications that incorporate IM features. "This partnership opens the door for developers to build applications that add context through online forums such as discussion groups, virtual classrooms, and multi-party chat," said Kevin Lynch, the chief software architect at Macromedia. AOL's instant messaging network supports over 1 billion messages a day and over 50 million active users each month.

Cell Phone Maker NTT DoCoMo First to Offer Macromedia's Flash On Handsets

Tokyo -- Japanese cell phone giant NTT DoCoMo announced on Monday that it will become the first cell phone maker to integrate Web publishing software firm Macromedia's pervasive Flash animation software into its phones. The technology will be embedded into new i-mode handsets, starting with the 505i series, which is scheduled for release later this year.
