The PR-machine known as Paris Hilton just released the reggae influenced single “Stars are Blind”. It remains to be seen if it will fly off the shelves as fast as her X-rated home video. Another reality TV star skilled in the art of PR who just released a single is newly divorced Jessica Simpson. The single is called “A Public Affair” and sounds like early Madonna pop. LA Times: Madonna Chastises Would-Be Downloaders In Spoof MP3 Files

Authored by Mark Hefflinger on April 16, 2003 - 1:59am.
Los Angeles -- Pop singer Madonna has taken unique steps to discourage consumers from downloading unauthorized versions of songs from her "American Life" album, The Los Angeles Times reported. MP3 files that feature the artist repeating the phrase "What the [expletive] do you think you're doing?", and made to look like songs from her new album, have been planted on major file-sharing networks like Kazaa by agents of her label Warner Bros. The spoofs are intended to deter users from trying to download tracks instead of buying the entire album as a download, an option for which Madonna has only recently granted her approval. The artist has banned the sale of her songs as digital singles, which makes them incompatible with major label-backed legitimate digital music services such as MusicNet and Pressplay.

Madonna Selling $1.49 Unrestricted MP3 Download of New Anti-War Single

Authored by Mark Hefflinger on March 25, 2003 - 4:13am.
Los Angeles -- Pop singer Madonna has posted an unrestricted MP3 of her new anti-war single "American Life," for purchase and download from her website and from a number of fan websites for $1.49. The move is an unlikely one for Madonna, who up to this point has largely refused to release digital versions of her songs, even onto legitimate services with secured audio formats. Fans who pre-ordered the song were told that if it happened to appear on file-sharing services before it was released, they would be emailed the song ahead of its release date, and on Sunday received the song before its planned release on Monday. Warner Bros Records offered fan sites the opportunity to win prizes for webmasters who promoted the single and sold the most downloads through their sites. A Warner Music representative told CNET News.com that "thousands" of sites signed on to be Web affiliates as a result of the Madonna download promotion.
