NAVTEQ to Acquire DC-Based Map Network for $37.5 Million

Washington - NAVTEQ, a Chicago-based producer of digital maps for vehicle navigation and location-based devices, said on Wednesday that it will pay $37.5 million in cash to acquire The Map Network, a DC-based producer of maps for travel destinations, special events and major hotels.

There’s a little summertime hysteria going on about Google’s progressive move to include local coupons in Google Maps. Jeff Jarvis goes so far as to say “this is a stake in the heart of local newspapers,” whose only hope has been to go hyperlocal via targeted promotions. Donna Bogatin, referencing an earlier post she did on Google’s ecommerce payment system, says that “Google has officially launched its ecommerce payment service with a predatory pricing model to lock in its advertisers, increase advertiser spend with Google and attract new Google advertiser customers.”

Epic Records Utilizes Google Earth for Audioslave Promotion

New York - Epic Records, a unit of Sony BMG, announced on Tuesday that it has utilized the Google Earth 3D mapping program as inspiration for the artwork theme for the band Audioslave's forthcoming album, "Revelations." The "Audioslave Nation" is located in the Indian Ocean between South America and New Zealand; a link on the band's website will automatically direct a user's Google Earth desktop application to bring up the location on the virtual globe.

Menlo Park, Calif. - Peerflix, a service that facilitates the swapping of DVDs by members through the U.S. mail, announced on Monday a partnership with the U.S. Postal Service that will allow Peerflix members to track the shipping status of their DVDs online.

USAToday.com Forms Partnership With The Map Network

Burbank, Calif. - WUSAToday.com said on Thursday that it has forged a technology and content partnership with The Map Network (TMN), a Washington-based provider of customizable, interactive destination maps. Through the deal, TMN's mapping platform will be integrated into USAToday.com's content. The site first worked with TMN to offer expanded destination coverage during Super Bowl XL in Detroit.
