Facebook Hits 300 Million Users, is Cash Flow Positive

Palo Alto, Calif. - Facebook now counts 300 million users worldwide, and became cash flow positive in its last financial quarter, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced in a blog post on Tuesday. "We thank all of you for helping us reach the point where we are connecting 300 million people, and we hope to serve you and many more people in increasingly deep and innovative ways in the months and years ahead," Zuckerberg wrote.

Facebook to Increase Headcount by 50% This Year

Palo Alto, Calif. - Facebook may increase its headcount by 40% to 50% this year, capitalizing on a glut of unemployed engineers brought on by the recession, CEO Mark Zuckerberg told Bloomberg. The company currently counts 1,000 employees. "No one else has been hiring," Zuckerberg told Bloomberg. "It's been a great environment for us because the economy has helped out."

Facebook Receives $200M Investment at $10 Billion Valuation

Palo Alto, Calif. - Confirming reports from last week, online social network Facebook on Tuesday announced that it has received a $200 million investment from Eastern European financing group Digital Sky Technologies (DST), which received a 1.96% equity stake in the company, valued at $10 billion for the transaction. "A number of firms approached us, but DST stood out because of the global perspective they bring -- backed up by the impressive growth and financial achievements of their internet investments," said Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

"Growing rapidly to 200 million users is a really good start, but we've always known that in order for Facebook to help people represent everything that is happening in their world, everyone needs to have a voice," wrote Zuckerberg.

Heeding Outcry, Facebook Dumps New "Terms of Use" Policy

Palo Alto, Calif. - Reacting to an uproar over a recent change in the way it handles user information, online social network Facebook announced late Tuesday that it will return to its previous "terms of use" policy. The company earlier this month had quietly changed its terms, allowing it to keep users' personal information and content in perpetuity, even if they decided to cancel their accounts. The decision sparked outrage among many users, who threatened boycotts of the service.

Report: Facebook to Settle Lawsuits with ConnectU

New York - Online social network Facebook is finalizing the settlement of several lawsuits with ConnectU, whose founders claim that Facebook head Mark Zuckerberg stole their idea for a company when they were all Harvard undergraduates, The New York Times reported. Citing a person briefed on the status of the lawsuits, The Times reports that all motions in Facebook's countersuit against ConnectU, which claim unfair business practices, have been terminated, while motions to dismiss all of the pending litigation between the companies are expected to be filed "within weeks."

Ah, the sweet ironies (and hypocrisies) in life. There’s something beautifully creepy about a person fighting so hard against the same thing they fought so hard to create. In today’s case, the culprit is Mark Zuckerberg, the young man more responsible than perhaps any other for his generation’s obsession with displaying itself publicly on the internet. New York - Facebook has asked a judge to throw out a lawsuit filed against it by ConnectU, a rival social network that claims Facebook was created from code stolen from ConnectU's creators, the Boston Globe reported on Friday.

Facebook Updates Site Design, Adds Network Portals

Palo Alto, Calif. - Facebook, the second-largest social network behind MySpace, on Wednesday launched a redesign of its site, designed to add new messaging functionality and make navigation easier. The company also launched more than 47,000 network portal pages for different regions, companies and schools. Each network will list statistics such as number of members, gender, political views and relationship status, aggregated from information its more than 18 million users choose to list in their profiles.
