American Idol LogoTwo former contestants of the Fox series American Idol came away with plenty of loot at last night’s American Music Awards, as Chris Daughtry and Carrie Underwood each captured three trophies.  The AMA’s, much like the reality series, allowed fans to vote online this year, a departure from the traditional platform in which winners were selected from an opinion poll of 20,000 music buyers, Reuters reports.

Amy Winehouse to Play mtvU Woodie Awards

Amy Winehouse is up for an mtvU award, and will play at the ceremonyBritish soul singer Amy Winehouse will play next month’s mtvU Woodie Awards in New York City, according to TMZ.  No one quite knows what a Woodie is at the moment, though Winehouse is up for Woodie of the Year.  The show airs November 15th on mtvU and mtvU.com, but will be filmed November 8th at the Roseland Ballroom.  By MTV’s recent experience with awards shows, the week-long delay is probably a smart move.

I don't want to spoil it by saying what this ad is for, but it won the Golden Lion for best advertising spot at the International Advertising Festival in Cannes. Safe to say it was created by the Nordpol+ Hamburg ad agency in Germany.

Dreamgirls newcomer Jennifer Hudson and old-timer Eddie Murphy each won a SAG award on Sunday night, making it ever more likely they both will take home Oscars in February. Eddie Murphy also took the opportunity to reflect a little on the nature of these Hollywood award shows and which movies and actors they celebrate.

Calabasas, Calif. - The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS) has announced the nominees for its 10th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards, which will be held next month in Las Vegas in connection with the D.I.C.E. Summit. Developer Epic Games' "Gears of War" garnered ten nominations -- including a nod for Overall Game of the Year -- a category where it is up against "Wii Sports" (Nintendo); "The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess" (Nintendo); "Guitar Hero 2" (Harmonix/Red Octane); and "Elder Scrolls IV" Oblivion (Bethesda Softworks). San Francisco - The Casual Games Association, an industry trade group of developers and publishers of casual online games, and casual games editorial site Gamezebo on Friday announced the nominees for the first annual Zeebys, which will recognize the best casual games of the year.

LA Times Opens User Voting Pool for Grammys, Golden Globes and Oscars

The Los Angeles Times yesterday launched an online voting pool for the Grammys and Golden Globes titled The Road To Gold. The interactive feature allows awards enthusiasts to test their “insider” knowledge against actual award voters and other online participants. In addition, private pools can be created for friends, family and coworkers. An Oscar-oriented game will launch once the Academy Awards nominations have been announced on January 23rd. Participants can fill out a ballot to vote for their favorite movie, TV and music nominees by logging onto The Envelope.

Game Developer Magazine Names Winners of Front Line Awards

San Francisco - CMP Technology's Game Developer magazine on Monday announced winners of its ninth annual Front Line Awards, which recognize the year's best game-making tools. Winners included Perforce Software's Perforce version 2006.1 (Best Programming Tool); Epic's Unreal Engine 3 (Best Engine); Engenuity Technologies' AI.implant (Best Middleware); and Ageia and BFG Technologies' PhysX (Best Hardware). In Nod to YouTube, MySpace, Time Names "You" 2006 Person of the Year

New York - Time Magazine named "you" its 2006 Person of the Year, a reference to the meteoric rise this year of user-generated content, on sites like YouTube, and social networking, on MySpace, Facebook and others.

"For seizing the reins of the global media, for founding and framing the new digital democracy, for working for nothing and beating the pros at their own game, Time's Person of the Year for 2006 is you," Time's Lev Grossman wrote.

Submissions Sought for 10th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards

Calabasas, Calif. - The Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences (AIAS) announced on Thursday that it is now accepting submissions for the 10th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards, which recognize exceptional video games and developers. Past recipients have included developers Richard Garriott, Sid Meier and Wil Wright, and games such as "Civilization IV," "God of War" and "Guitar Hero." The AIAS is accepting submissions at Interactive.org through Dec. 8, 2006, with an awards ceremony hosted by comedian Jay Mohr to be held in Las Vegas in February.

New York - Representatives from ad agencies including Agency.com, R/GA, Crispin Porter & Bogusky, Tribal DDB and Ogilvy & Mather have been added as new members of the International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences, and will serve on the jury for the new interactive advertising categories recently announced by The Webby Awards. The 15 new Webby Award interactive ad categories include banners, rich-media ads, integrated marketing campaigns, and viral and e-mail marketing.

WashingtonPost.com Wins New Media Emmy for Katrina Documentary

Arlington, Va. - Washingtonpost.com said on Tuesday that its coverage of Hurricane Katrina has won the first national Emmy award for original video journalism created specifically for new media. Senior videojournalist Travis Fox, producer of the Katrina series, accepted the award at a ceremony on Monday in New York. Other nominees included Web documentaries produced by nytimes.com, mtv.com and nationalgeographic.com.

Call for Entries: 11th Annual Webby Awards

New York - The International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences on Tuesday announced a call for entries for the 11th Annual Webby Awards. This year will see the debut of new awards for interactive advertising and online film and video. Nominations are due by Oct. 27. Nominees will be announced in April, and winners will be unveiled in June 2007.
