Who doesn't love a good graduation speech?  Usually they are full of great advice, wonderful hope and optimism, and more than one caution about expecting things to come too easily or focusing too much on money.  One day, perhaps I will be important and old enough to give one of those speeches and offer some sage advice from the stage.  In the meantime, I propose a question to my fellow bloggers: what tips or advice would you offer to the new college graduates that they probably didn't learn in school?

New York - mtvU, a unit of Viacom's MTV Networks, announced on Wednesday that it will acquire RateMyProfessors.com, a site with over 6.6 million user-generated ratings on more than 900,000 college professors.

Online Tutoring Firm TutorVista Secures $10.75 Million in Second Round

San Francisco – TutorVista, a San Francisco-based provider of leading online tutoring and test preparation services, said on Wednesday that it has landed $10.75 million in its second round of funding, which included a $7 million investment from Lightspeed Venture Partners. Sequoia Capital India and Silicon Valley Bank also participated in the round, which will allow the company to expand its services and operations worldwide.

XM Satellite Radio to Broadcast 12 Additional Bowl Games

Washington - XM Satellite Radio, a provider of satellite radio service to more than 7 million subscribers, said on Tuesday that it will broadcast 12 additional college football bowl games. The company had already announced plans to broadcast the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) National Championship Game, the Sugar Bowl, the Orange Bowl and the Fiesta Bowl. Liemandt Foundation Posts Educational Game Contest Titles Online

Austin, Texas - The Liemandt Foundation, a nonprofit that operates the "Hidden Agenda" educational video game development contest for college students, announced that winning games from the past years of the contest are now available online for play by middle school students. The betas versions of the games teach school subjects like science and math. The winning collegiate development team that created each title was awarded $25,000 from the contest.

Yahoo Debuts Mobile Social Networking Service on Campuses

Sunnyvale, Calif. - Yahoo has launched a mobile social networking service, allowing members to share photos, videos and text messages on their mobile phones, InformationWeek reported.

The Mixd service will initially be marketed on a number of college campuses, while the company tests the service and gathers feedback.

Survey: Online Education Enrollment Booms in 2006

Needham, Mass. - A new survey by the Sloan Consortium, an association of higher education institutions and organizations committed to online education, indicates that the number of students taking at least one online course in the current semester hit 3.2 million, up from 2.3 million a year ago.

College Students Create "Fantasy Congress" Online Game

Los Angeles - A group of college students has created an online game where players create a "fantasy team" of U.S. lawmakers and compete to see whose team of policy makers is most effective, Reuters reported. The "Fantasy Congress" game was created with $5,000 in prize money from a school-sponsored entrepreneurship award. "If people cared about politics as much as they care about sports, we'd have a better democracy," Andrew Lee, a senior at Claremont McKenna College and a developer of the game, told Reuters.

New York - CBS Corporation's CSTV Networks, a provider of college sports coverage, announced on Wednesday that it partnered with VeriSign to launch a new mobile service. CSTV 2 Go will initially offer custom ringtones and wallpapers from 100 colleges across the U.S., and customized team news alerts that let subscribers select the sports and frequency by which they receive alerts -- down to per inning, per period or per half.

Blackboard To Integrate Search Technology From Google

New York - Procter & Gamble said on Thursday that its Crest Whitestrips brand has launched a promotion on social networking site Facebook targeting students on college campuses. Members of the "Smile State" group on Facebook at 20 schools will be able to receive pre-release movie screening passes; participate in rock, paper, scissors contests; view blogs from Island Def Jam artists; and compete for the chance to host a private concert at their schools.

Viacom's Redstone Not Interested in Facebook: "Price Too High"

New York - Media conglomerate Viacom, whose holdings include Paramount Pictures, MTV, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central, has ruled out a bid on social networking site Facebook, chairman Sumner Redstone said in a TV interview with Charlie Rose. "We would not consider Facebook," Redstone said. "We looked at it. The price is too high." Redstone called the experience of losing out to News Corporation's Rupert Murdoch in the competition to acquire MySpace "humiliating," adding the company's inaction was a key reason for his recent decision to oust CEO Tom Freston. "Before Rupert got into the act, MySpace was sitting there for $500 million and Tom didn't take it," Redstone told Charlie Rose. Facebook, the second most-popular social network behind MySpace, claims 9.5 million members and has also reportedly been in negotiations with Yahoo and Microsoft.

U. of Illinois Taps UsableNet for Mobile Sports Service

New York - UsableNet, a provider of mobile services to universities, corporations and government agencies, said on Friday that the University of Illinois is using its Lift Mobile service to deliver content including live sports scores to students, alumni and fans. New York-based UsableNet said the Illini mobile site has attracted 30,000 visitors since it launched in September.

Los Gatos, Calif. - Audible Magic, a developer of audio fingerprinting technology that can identify songs distributed digitally, announced on Wednesday that it has added a new module for its CopySense Appliance that helps universities enforce network policies. In addition to filtering the illegal sharing of copyrighted media files, Audible Magic's service now also allows schools to automate actions like the sending of notifications to students that they have violated campus network policies, and the restriction of access to campus networks.

Campus Download Service Provider Cdigix Adds 25 Schools

Seattle - Cdigix, a provider of digital music and movie download services for college campuses, announced on Tuesday that 25 new schools have signed on to offer its services. The University of Washington, Indiana State University and the University of Colorado at Boulder are among the company's new customers. Seattle-based Cdigix said it still is on track to count 100 school customers by the end of the year.

N.Y. Times: Yahoo's Bid for Facebook: $900 Million

New York - The New York Times on Friday reported that Yahoo's buyout offer for Facebook, the second-largest online social network, includes $900 million and the opportunity to keep the company somewhat independent. "We're focused on building the company for the long term," 22-year-old Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg told The Times. Zuckerberg reportedly turned down a $750 million buyout offer from Viacom in early 2006, asking instead for $2 billion for his company.
