Report: US Consumers are Ready for Relevant Mobile Marketing

Cambridge, Mass. - According to a new report by market analysis firm Forrester Research called "Is The US Ready For Mobile Marketing?", early results show that consumers will readily engage in campaigns as long as marketers deliver valuable information or content, even though 79% of consumers perceive the concept of mobile ads to be annoying.

CE Search Engine Retrevo Lands $3.2 Million in Second Round

Sunnyvale, Calif. - Retrevo, a Sunnyvale-based dedicated search engine focused on helping consumers research, buy or fix their electronic products, said on Friday that it has secured $3.2 million in its second round of funding, led by Norwest Venture Partners. Previous investor Alloy Ventures also participated.

U.S. Retail Web Sites Collected Over $100 Billion in 2006

San Francisco, CA - According to a report from comScore Networks, U.S. retail web sites collected $102.1 billion in 2006, marking a 24% increase over 2005. The report pointed to strong spending in the last two months of the year as a significant factor in pushing spending over the $100 billion mark. Holiday shoppers spent $24.6 billion between Nov. 1 and Dec. 31, 2006, a rise of 26% over 2005. The report tracked all sources of consumer online spending except travel.

There are some hard, cold truths to the way we use our cell phones, but they’ve become commonplace to the point of forming an accepted, unwritten code. We all screen calls we should otherwise answer. We all reply to missed calls with texts. We pray to reach voicemail on calls we have to (but don’t want to) make. When we call someone and they don’t answer, and we know they looked at their phone and made a decision to ignore our call, we’re okay with that, because we likely, at some point in the day, did the same thing to someone else.

Spanish Judge Rules "Personal Use" Downloaders Aren't Criminals

London - A judge in Spain has ruled that those who download free music off the Internet for personal use are not criminals, The Register reported. Judge Paz Aldecoa, of Santander in northern Spain, called file-sharing "a practiced behavior where the aim is not to gain wealth but to obtain private copies."

San Francisco - The overwhelming majority (81%) of tech enthusiasts remain skeptical about which next-generation DVD technology will be the market standard, according to a new survey by CNET and the Consumer Electronics Association. The study comes as manufacturers prepare to release several players that run on varying formats. Other factors that respondents said will initially keep them from buying the new players include the price of the machines (74%) and concerns about their compatibility with current DVD players (54%). "The studios, manufacturers, retailers and media companies have their own theories on how this will play out in the market," said Claudia Haase, senior research manager at CNET. “But, at the end of the day, the only thing that matters is the consumer."

New York - One in ten online consumers now watches TV shows online, according to the latest Consumer Internet Barometer, a report created by The Conference Board and TNS. Personal convenience and avoiding commercials were the top reasons cited for online TV viewing, though 75% of those surveyed reported no change in traditional TV viewing habits.

London - Europeans are more likely than Americans to use their mobile phones to access the Internet, as 29% of European Internet users regularly log on via their phones, compared with 19% of U.S. users, according to a report from comScore. Germany and Italy boast the highest mobile Web penetration in Europe (34% each), followed by France (28%), Spain (26%) and the U.K. (24%). Nokia is the most popular handset amongst European mobile Internet users, capturing 50% market share in Italy and 22% in France, compared with 17% of the market in the U.S., where Motorola leads with 26%.

Arlington, Va. - About 77% of consumer electronics purchases are influenced by Internet research, according to a new study commissioned by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) and Yahoo. The study, conducted by Hall and Partners, explored the ways that consumers buy cell phones, computers, digital cameras, digital music players and televisions, and found that online research time directly correlated to product price.

Video Game Industry Veteran Launches Consumer Advocacy Group

Wilton, Conn. - The Entertainment Consumers Association (ECA), a new Web-based consumer advocacy group that will lobby local and federal lawmakers on behalf of video gamers, announced its launch on Thursday. The non-profit group was created by Hal Halpin, founder of the Interactive Entertainment Merchants Association (IEMA) -- a trade group representing the video and computer game industries that recently merged with the Video Software Dealers Association (VSDA). "These individuals are the life-blood to this multibillion dollar industry yet they have been unrepresented, until now, which is exciting for myself and the rest of the ECA team as we are the organization that now allows their voices to be heard," said Halpin. The ECA will represent gamers in areas like consumer rights, anti-games legislation and a host of other public policy concerns. For a $19.99 annual membership, the ECA will also offer discounts on games and access to industry events, and in the future potentially career assistance, scholarships and low-cost health insurance.

Report: Consumer Spending Hits $25 Million on Blu-ray, HD DVD Players

Los Angeles - Consumers have so far spent $25 million on the three available models of next-generation Blu-ray and HD DVD players, along with $5 million on movies for the devices, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Warner Home Video senior vice president of market management Steve Nickerson, who provided the figures to THR, also projected that consumers will have spent a combined $900 million on next-generation DVD players and movies by the end of the year, down from the company's earlier forecast of $1.1 billion to $2.2 billion. Nickerson added that Warner predicts 1.7 million high-definition drives will be in consumers' homes by year's end, broken down to include 500,000 standalone players, 1 million game consoles with Blu-ray or HD DVD drives, and 200,000 computer drives. Sony Pictures on Tuesday released the first 50GB Blu-ray Disc movie title, which features twice the capacity for high-definition content storage on its dual layers than does the standard Blu-ray Disc. Fox, Lionsgate and Warner Bros. are also expected to release 50GB Blu-ray movies.

Circle Back Music Store Lets Users Vote on Which Charities Benefit

San Francisco - Circle Back Music on Wednesday introduced its service that allows consumers to purchase and download music from mostly independent artists, and vote for which non-profits will receive 10% of the company's profits. In addition to independent artists, San Francisco-based Circle Back said that major label artists including Natalie Merchant and Maroon 5 have contributed auction items or tracks to aid its efforts. Non-profits participating include Axis of Justice, FINCA International, Honor the Earth, Sweatshop Watch, Women for Women International, and Worth Our Weight.
