Dallas - The Cyberathlete Professional League (CPL), a tournament circuit for pro video game players, announced on Wednesday that chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has signed on as the worldwide lead title sponsor of the league. The CPL ended a similar relationship with Intel in February, saying then that it would not again this year be giving away $1 million in prize money to pro gamers at stops in nine countries. While some outlets recently reported the CPL 2006 season had been cancelled, CPL CEO Angel Munoz said on Wednesday that the league will announce details of its 2006 season in June. This year's season will feature stops in nine countries, and run from August through a televised winter championships event in Dallas in December; the league announced earlier this week that BenQ signed on to sponsor the Dallas event, and will provide 160 LCD monitors. The most significant change from last year's season will be the absence of $50,000 in prize money up for grabs at each tour stop.

Los Angeles - Fox Broadcasting announced on Monday that it partnered with Toyota to produce a series of "mobisodes" for its "Prison Break" primetime TV series. The brief original episodes for mobile phones will be offered for free to Sprint customers, and will feature 10-second commercials for Toyota's new Yaris vehicles at the beginning of each mobisode. The "Prison Break: Proof of Innocence" mobile content will feature new characters and some of the same sets from the TV series. The mobile series is produced by Eric Young, who also produced the "24: Conspiracy" mobisode series for Fox.

New York - Major League Gaming, a league for professional video game players, announced on Monday that it has signed Scion and Boost Mobile as sponsors, and will air its entire 2006 season on USA Network. Boost Mobile, a mobile virtual network operator, will offer its 2.6 million subscribers access to pro player profiles, video diaries and match play highlights. Major League Gaming will hold competitions in seven cities in 2006, including Dallas, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Chicago and Las Vegas, with seven one-hour tournament specials to be broadcast on USA Network. The league will award winning teams and players over $800,000 in cash and prizes during the 2006 season.

Seoul, South Korea - The World Cyber Games announced on Thursday that Microsoft has signed on to sponsor the global tournament through 2008. Microsoft will provide hardware, software and marketing support for its events, and the Xbox 360 and Windows will become the exclusive platforms for the console and PC. Microsoft will also provide access to its Xbox Live online game service to the organization. The 2006 World Cyber Games Grand Final is scheduled to take place Oct. 18-22 in Monza, Italy.

New York - MTV and VH1 said on Tuesday that they will offer a "flashmob" concert performance from Pink on their mobile and broadband platforms. The April 5 concert, announced to fans via text messages and e-mails on the day of the show, was sponsored by Honda to promote the launch of the 2006 Civic. Several full songs from the show will be offered on VH1's VSPOT and MTV's Overdrive broadband channels, while video clips will be available on MTV Mobile and VH1 Mobile.
