Dulles, Va. - Despite losing a large portion of its subscriber base, AOL saw its advertising revenue jump 41% last year, Time Warner said on Wednesday.

Vongo Adds 250 Titles From Parent Starz to Movie Download Service

Englewood, Colo. - Liberty Media's Starz Media on Tuesday announced a multi-year licensing agreement with Vongo, Starz Entertainment's broadband video download service. The deal will provide Vongo with more than 250 new movies and other video titles for on-demand rental, or purchase and download through its service. Vongo offers unlimited streaming access to 1,000 movies and 2,500 videos, as well as a streaming Starz TV channel, for $9.99 per month.

AOL Names Napster Exclusive Music Subscription Service

Los Gatos, Calif. - Online DVD rental service Netflix announced on Wednesday that sometime next month it expects to deliver its one-billionth movie in the mail to one of its 5.7 million subscribers. The company plans to launch a new ad campaign, with the tagline -- "Nearly one billion movies delivered so far. Zero late fees." -- on the major broadcast networks.

Blockbuster Drops Lowest-Priced Online DVD Rental Plan

Dallas - Video rental giant Blockbuster has discontinued a test of a $5.99 per month online DVD rental service, which matched the cheapest offering from rival Netflix, Reuters reported. The company did not say why it was ending the service.

Chicago Manual of Style Launches Online Edition

Chicago - The University of Chicago on Thursday announced the launch of an online, subscription-based version of its Chicago Manual of Style. The online grammar manual, used by journalists, writers, academics and others, will be available in a 30-day free trial, after which point it will cost $25 for the first year and $30 annually thereafter. Bulk subscriptions will also be offered for institutions.

Sonos Player Adds PC-Free Access to Real's Rhapsody Music Service

Santa Barbara, Calif. - Digital music device developer Sonos on Thursday introduced its Sonos System Software 2.0 update, which enables downloading of songs and access to Web radio stations from its Sonos player through RealNetworks' Rhapsody service without the need for a PC. With the update, the Sonos player can now connect directly to a broadband connection. The offering also includes a 30-day free trial to Real's Rhapsody subscription service.

RealNetworks, PlayPhone Launch Mobile Games Subscription Service

Seattle - RealNetworks announced on Wednesday the launch of a mobile games and entertainment subscription service that will feature titles from its RealArcade online service. The company partnered with direct-to-consumer mobile distributor PlayPhone on the service, which will offer more than 150 games and thousands of ringtones and wallpaper graphics for cell phones. RealArcade Mobile will be available to Cingular, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile subscribers for an additional $9.99 per month, which will be added to their monthly mobile bills.

eMusic Launches Digital Music Service Across Europe

New York - eMusic, the second most-popular digital music service in the U.S., announced on Tuesday the launch of its service in all 25 European Union member countries. New York-based eMusic offers a catalog of 1.7 million tracks from 8,500 independent labels in the unprotected MP3 format, meaning songs can play on any MP3 player, including Apple's iPod. "The monopoly of iTunes in Europe is over," said eMusic president and CEO David Pakman. "European consumers, fed up with homogeneous music and services focused only on mainstream pop can now discover a wealth of music created to transcend rules, boundaries and commercialism. At eMusic, fans can explore our vast catalogue of groundbreaking independent music which plays on any digital music device." The European eMusic stores will offer three subscription plans: 40 downloads per month for 12.99 euro ($16.48); 65 downloads per month for 16.99 euro ($21.55); or 90 downloads per month for 20.99 euro ($26.62), which breaks down to about 29 cents per song. The company said it will market the service with Classic FM, The Guardian and Stuff magazine in the U.K., and will bundle free downloads with MP3 players sold at High Street retailers.

Los Angeles - Digital music service Napster on Tuesday began offering a free 512MB MP3 player to customers who purchase a three-month subscription to Napster To Go, the company's $14.95 per month service that allows unlimited downloads to portable players. The company added that it will also offer its Napster-branded 1GB MP3 player for $50 with the purchase of a three-month Napster To Go subscription.

Lawsuit Alleging "Massive Consumer Fraud" Filed Against Webloyalty.com

Norwalk, Conn. - A class action lawsuit alleging massive consumer fraud against online marketing services company Webloyalty.com has been filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts. According to the complaint, Connecticut-based Webloyalty.com, which has partnerships with websites including Fandango.com, Classmates.com and EBGames.com, charged "unwitting consumers" monthly fees for memberships after they used its partners' sites to make purchases.

Turner's GameTap Adds "Sam & Max" Webcomic Series

Atlanta - Turner Broadcasting's GameTap announced on Thursday that it will add episodes of developer Telltale Games' "Sam & Max" webcomic series. The episodes will be included in GameTap's $9.95 monthly subscription price, and will also be made available for purchase 15 days after each episode's debut on GameTap.
