Social Media Sites Thoof, Social.fm Shut Down

Los Angeles - Two venture-funded social media sites, the social news-ranking site Thoof and social music site Social.fm (formerly Mercora) have been shut down, TechCrunch and GigaOM reported, respectively.

Handmark to Distribute Social.FM Mobile Playlist-sharing Service

Sunnyvale, Calif. - Social.FM, a social music service for mobile and Web users that allows sharing of streaming music playlists, on Monday announced a partnership with mobile media distributor Handmark. Under the deal, Handmark will market and deliver Social.FM through its channels in the U.S., Canada and Europe.

Mercora Changes Name to Social.FM, Launches New Services

Sunnyvale, Calif. - Online music service Mercora, which lets users create their own Internet radio stations, said on Wednesday that it has launched a new service and changed its corporate name to Social.FM. The company said that it has launched free beta versions of its products, including Social.FM Web, a social network revolving around music; Social.FM Desktop, a social media application that allows users to broadcast their favorite artists and playlists; and Social.FM Network, a distributed content delivery network that encodes and streams media in multiple formats to fixed and wireless networks. "[The name] Social.FM better reflects the vision, product and market direction of the company," said Srivats Sampath, the company's president and CEO.

Santa Clara, Calif. - Mercora, an online radio network with over 100,000 user-programmed channels, announced on Monday a partnership with online pop culture magazine PopMatters, on a program to provide promotion for indie music artists. The Listen Up program offers labels "premier streaming media placements" within both PopMatters' editorial content and media center, and in Mercora's music channels; labels will also receive revenue through SoundExchange. The companies said labels initially participating in the Listen Up program include Kill Rock Stars, Ninja Tune, Thrill Jockey and Warp. Founded in 1999, PopMatters claims 1.2 million unique monthly users and 15 million monthly pageviews.

Mercora Launches Streaming Full-Track Mobile Music Service

Los Angeles - Mercora, a provider of software that lets users broadcast their own Internet radio stations, announced on Monday the launch of a new service that streams full-length tracks from Mercora stations to mobile phones. The "M" service will be offered for free through Oct. 31, after which time it will cost $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year. Subscribers will be able to stream songs from their own Mercora stations and eventually from those of up to five other Mercora users. "We've beat Steve Jobs to the iPhone. Our software delivers all the same capabilities. And we've beat Microsoft to the Zune," Mercora CEO Srivats Sampath told CNET News.com.

Nettwerk Music Group to Promote Artists on Mercora P2P Radio Network

The services will provide NME.com visitors and Tiscali subscribers in the U.K. and Italy with the ability to create their own Internet radio stations featuring their own music collections, as well as browse and listen to their friends' stations. Both services will be offered for free to NME and Tiscali customers. Santa Clara, Calif. - lMercora, a peer-to-peer network of user-created streaming radio stations, announced on Tuesday that it has integrated its IM Radio service with Google Talk, the search giant's new IM/voice service. The partnership will allow Google Talk users to stream their buddies' music collections, and also provide access to other Mercora users' radio stations through Mercora Music Search.

Mercora Adds Song Search Feature to P2P Streaming Radio Network

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Mercora, a provider of a peer-to-peer streaming radio network, on Tuesday launched a new service that lets users search for songs offered on Mercora users' individual radio stations, and play them on demand. The search engine, which Mercora is offering for free to website and blog operators to place on their own sites, returns results from the repository of over 30 million tracks from over 6 million artists offered by Mercora's network of users. Santa Clara, Calif.-based Mercora maintains the service is legal; it does not offer downloads, and the songs are streamed from one user's computer to another single user. "We're looking at their more recent offerings to see if they're in compliance with the (law)," John Simson, executive director of SoundExchange, the group that collects and distributes royalties from Web radio stations, told CNET News.com. "We haven't come to a conclusion yet."

Peer-to-Peer Internet Radio Firm Mercora Raises $5 Million

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Mercora, a start-up whose technology allows users to offer their own Internet radio stations and listen to others' stations on their PCs, said on Monday that it has raised more than $5 million in its second round of funding, led by Norwest Venture Partners. Mercora's service combines peer-to-peer and Internet streaming technologies to allow users to webcast their music on the Internet without breaking licensing rules. The company claims to have more than 300,000 registered users, offering 21 million songs on over 2,000 stations.
