Microsoft Cancels Development on Marvel Online Game

Redmond, Wash. - Microsoft Game Studios has cancelled its planned massively multiplayer online game that was to be centered in the Marvel Comics universe, GamesIndustry.biz reports. "Marvel Universe Online" was in development for Xbox 360 and the PC. "When we first entered into the development and agreement of the development of Marvel Universe Online, we thought we would create another subscription-based MMO," MGS head Shane Kim told MTV Multiplayer. "And if you really look at the data there's basically one [game] that's successful and everything else wouldn't meet our level or definition of commercial success."

BioWare Signs Seth Green as Voice Talent for "Mass Effect"

Redmond, Wash. - Microsoft Game Studios and developer BioWare said this week that they have signed voice talent including actor Seth Green ("Austin Powers," "Robot Chicken") to appear in their forthcoming game, "Mass Effect." The game is set for release for Xbox 360 on Nov. 20.

Redmond, Wash. - Microsoft on Friday announced plans to spin-off its Bungie Studios game development unit, creators of the "Halo" franchise, while retaining an undisclosed stake in the company.

Los Angeles - Microsoft has shuttered its FASA Studio game development unit, developers of the "Shadowrun" franchise, GameDaily.com reported.

"Halo 3" to Ship on Sept. 25; Multiplayer Beta Launched

Los Angeles - Microsoft Game Studios and developer Bungie Studios announced on Wednesday that the final chapter in their "Halo" game trilogy, "Halo 3," will ship to retailers on Sept. 25. The companies launched the multiplayer beta of the game on Wednesday, alongside a special Halo-themed edition of Microsoft's Zune portable media player. The previous installment of the game, "Halo 2," generated a record $125 million in sales in its first day on sale.

Microsoft Game Studios Opening European Office in Reading, U.K.

Reading, England - Microsoft has announced plans to establish a European base in Reading, England for its Microsoft Game Studios, close to Microsoft-owned studios Lionhead and Rare, GamesIndustry.biz reported. The company named Phil Spencer to head the new office.

Microsoft Game Studios to Publish First Sigil Games Online Title

San Jose, Calif. - Sigil Games Online announced on Wednesday that its first project, a massively multiplayer online PC game called "Vanguard: Saga of Heroes," will be published by Microsoft Game Studios later this year. Carlsbad, Calif.-based Sigil is comprised of developers who worked on titles including "EverQuest II," "Asheron's Call," "City of Heroes" and "The Matrix Online".
