Chicago - Midway Games said on Thursday that is has shipped more than 1.8 million units of its "Happy Feet" game, based on the Warner Bros. Pictures film, to retailers. Since opening in U.S. theaters on Nov. 17, the film has grossed over $326 million. Midway's game based on the movie is available for PlayStation 2, Nintendo Wii, GameCube, DS, Game Boy Advance and the PC. Separately, Midway said that it plans to release six of its classic arcade titles, such as "Joust," "Gauntlet" and "Mortal Kombat II," as digitally downloadable titles for the PlayStation 3. Chicago - Midway Games announced on Wednesday that MTV Films and Paramount Pictures have purchased the movie rights to its "The Wheelman" game, currently in development by Midway and actor Vin Diesel's Tigon Studios. Diesel is expected to star in the movie, which will be produced by Tigon Studios and MTV Films, and distributed by Paramount. The deal is the second of three titles to be produced under an agreement between MTV Networks and Midway, which will jointly sell in-game advertising and collaborate on soundtrack development. "With the close cooperation of Midway, Paramount and MTV Films, we are putting together a new way to tell a story," said Tigon Studios production executive Cos Lazouras. "Working in tandem with the movie, we envision the video game will introduce 'The Wheelman' in a way that creates a unique connection with the audience that will blend the interactive world with the experience of the motion picture."

Separately, Chicago-based Midway said that it has signed an agreement with wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson to star in its forthcoming "SpyHunter: Nowhere to Run" game title. The game is slated for release in the summer of 2006 for PlayStation 2 and Xbox; Universal Pictures is also developing a motion picture based on Midway's SpyHunter franchise.

New York -- Viacom's MTV announced on Monday the creation of MTV Games, a new interactive entertainment division that will develop original titles as well as incubate original game franchises in partnership with independent game developers. The new division said that it has partnered with video game publisher Midway Games on the development of three upcoming game titles. Viacom chairman and CEO Sumner Redstone also holds a majority stake in Midway. Under the deal, MTV will sell in-game advertising and collaborate on soundtrack development for Midway's "L.A. Rush" and two other undisclosed titles, and also share in royalties from game sales. "L.A. Rush" will feature MTV branding and the crew from its TV series "Pimp My Ride," in addition to a 75-song soundtrack. MTV said its new games division will be managed by MTV Interactive Products senior director Tony Calandra, and overseen by Jeff Yapp, executive vice president of MTV Networks Music and Logo Enterprise.

Chicago -- A number of shareholder class action lawsuits have been filed against video game developer Midway Games, alleging the company's share price was inflated due to misleading statements made by the company. The charges include not informing shareholders of "material disruptions" at Midway that made the company miss product release dates, which led to decreased revenue and inaccurate revenue projections being provided to shareholders. Chicago-based Midway reported earnings of $5 million for the third quarter, far below its earlier projections of between $7-$11 million, and at the same time announced the departure of CEO Neil D. Nicastro -- two events that resulted in a considerable drop in the company's share price.

Chicago -- Midway Games, a developer of titles including the popular "Mortal Kombat" franchise, announced that it will lay off 74 employees -- or about 10 percent of its worldwide staff -- as it closes its game development studio in Milpitas, California. The Milpitas studio's remaining 42 employees will be consolidated into Midway's game studio in San Diego.
