Chinese Online Games Firm ChangYou Opens U.S. Subsidiary

Santa Clara, Calif. - ChangYou.com (NASD: CYOU), a Chinese online game developer whose shares trade on the Nasdaq, said that it has launched a U.S. subsidiary in Santa Clara, California, with plans to launch its online games in Asia to American gamers. The company said that its first U.S. release, "Dragon Oath," will launch open beta Nov. 5. The title, which has run in Asia for over three years, has over 75 million registered players and 910,000 concurrent users.

Report: U.S. Virtual Goods Market to Hit $1 Billion This Year

San Francisco - The U.S. market for virtual goods -- including items in online games, virtual worlds and social network sites -- is expected to reach $1 billion this year, according to a report published by Inside Virtual Goods and the Virtual Goods Summit.

China's Shanda to Spin-off Games Unit in Nasdaq IPO

Shanghai - China's Shanda Interactive Entertainment (NASD: SNDA) this week announced plans to spin-off its games unit with an initial public offering (IPO) on the Nasdaq. Reuters reports that the company aims to raise as much as $800 million in the offering, proceeds from which will be used to fund acquisitions and joint ventures, and for capital expenditures.

Turbine Lands $6.6 Million for Multiplayer Online Games

Report: South Korean Online Game Market Grew 20% in '08

Amsterdam - MMO Life, the operator of a network of portals that offer news, reviews and demos of massively multiplayer online games, said on Tuesday that it has acquired a 49% stake in Germany's MMOCluster, a multi-language network of gaming-related portals. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Amsterdam-based MMO Life recently raised $1.3 million in initial funding.

Online Game "Tabula Rasa" to Shut Down in February

Los Angeles - Video game publisher NCsoft will shut down the servers on its "Tabula Rasa" massively multiplayer online game in February, because "the game never achieved the player population we had hoped for," according to a note on its website. The game was developed by veteran designer Richard Garriott ("Ultima"). The company said it will make the game free to play in its last weeks, starting on Jan. 10.

Irvine, Calif. - Activision's (NASD: ATVI) Blizzard Entertainment studio said on Thursday that the second expansion to its massively popular "World of Warcraft" online multiplayer game, "Wrath of the Lich King," has sold 2.8 million copies in its first 24 hours on sale -- making it the fastest-selling PC game of all time. The previous record of nearly 2.4 million copies was set last year by the game's previous expansion, "The Burning Crusade."

Irvine, Calif. - Video game publisher Blizzard Entertainment, which recently merged with Activision (NASD: ATVI), announced on Tuesday that its "World of Warcraft" massively multiplayer online game has now surpassed 11 million players worldwide. Blizzard plans to release its latest expansion, "Wrath of the Lich King," on Nov. 13. The game first debuted in 2004.
