Espoo, Finland - Cell phone maker Nokia (NYSE: NOK) announced on Friday that it will lay off up to 330 employees from its research and development operations, representing about 2% of its global research and development staff of 17,000.

RealNetworks to Power Mobile Music for France's SFR

Seattle - RealNetworks (NASD: RNWK) announced on Wednesday that it has signed a three-year deal to power the mobile music service for France-based mobile network operator SFR. Real said its mobile music services are now deployed with 15 providers in 14 countries, including 11 in Europe.

London - U.K. mobile operator O2 sold 30,000 Apple (NASD: AAPL) iPhones on their first day on sale in the country, a company spokesman announced on Twitter. "Orange UK had sold more than 30k iPhones, smashing what we believe is the previously published first day sales records for a phone in the UK!," tweeted Orange's Conor Maples.

Universal to Debut New Interactive Blu-ray Features

Universal City, Calif. - Universal Studios Home Entertainment announced on Tuesday that several of its upcoming Blu-ray releases will include new interactive features, including social networking and mobile applications for the iPhone. The pocket BLU app connects a user's iPhone via Wi-Fi to a network-connected Blu-ray player, and can become an advanced remote control; provide a video timeline; function as a keyboard for Blu-ray chat and messaging; and unlock exclusive mobile bonus content. The social BLU technology will allow users to send Facebook and Twitter status updates from their Blu-ray player, and in the future let users share film-related user-generated content. The new features will be available on forthcoming Blu-ray editions of films including "Bruno," "Funny People" and "Inglorious Basterds."

Sprint to Cut Up to 2,500 More Jobs by Year's End

Reston, Va. - Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S) said that it plans to cut 2,000-2,500 jobs -- around 5% of its workforce -- by the end of this year in a move to reduce its annual labor costs by at least $350 million. The company said that the cuts will impact positions throughout the organization, including a reduction in contractors and other outside labor.

RadioShack Stores to Sell Apple's iPhone

Fort Worth, Texas - Electronics retail store chain RadioShack (NYSE: RSH) announced on Monday that it will begin selling Apple's (NASD: AAPL) iPhone next year. The device will first be sold at RadioShack stores in the Dallas and New York metro areas this month. RadioShack stores already stock T-Mobile phones, and its kiosks in Sam's Club stores sell Verizon Wireless products.

U.K.'s O2 to Allow iPhone Unlocking After Contract Expires

London - U.K. wireless carrier O2 plans to allow customers to unlock their Apple (NASD: AAPL) iPhones for use on competing networks, according to an interview with CEO Matthew Key published by the Times Online. "Once the iPhone becomes available on other UK networks, we will allow O2 customers to unlock their iPhones, although of course they will still need to honor any outstanding contract period they have. At the end of their contract period, they are entirely free to move to another operator," Key told the Times. O2 competitors Orange and Vodafone are expected to offer the iPhone in the U.K.
