Tokyo - Japanese electronics firm Toshiba plans to begin mass-producing a line of ultra-small 1GB and 2GB memory cards for cell phones and other devices beginning in September, according to a report in Japan's Nihon Keizai.

Redwood City, Calif. - Obopay, a developer of mobile commerce services, announced on Wednesday that youth-focused mobile virtual network operator Amp'd Mobile will deploy its mobile payment systems to its subscribers in the U.S. Redwood City, Calif.-based Obopay's application will allow Amp'd subscribers to receive, send and spend money using their mobile phones.

Vidiator Awarded Patents for 3D Avatar Technologies

Bellevue, Wash. - Vidiator, a developer of mobile TV and 3D messaging technologies for mobile devices, announced on Wednesday that it has been awarded a number of "wide-reaching" patents for 3D avatar technologies and avatar-based multimedia messaging applications. Bellevue, Wash.-based Vidiator said the patents cover the delivery of 3D avatar-based multimedia messages or chat; avatars created via algorithms to generate superior facial expressions derived from audiovisual input; and avatars created using facial tracking technology. The company did not announce plans for any licensing campaign for its new patents.

Autodesk Powers GPS Child Locator Service for Disney Mobile

San Rafael, Calif. - Autodesk announced on Wednesday that its technology will power a forthcoming "family locator" feature on the Disney Mobile wireless service. The technology will allow parents to locate their children's cell phones using GPS technology. Launching in June, the Disney Mobile service will also allow parents to set spending allowances, and track usage of voice minutes and text messages; set hourly and time of day restrictions on phone usage; program restricted and always-on phone numbers; and prioritize important family messages.

Top Level Domain for Mobile Phones to Launch on May 22

Las Vegas - Mobile Top Level Domain (mTLD), a joint venture backed by phone makers, wireless networks and Microsoft, announced on Wednesday the availability of the first Internet address create for mobile phones. "Many existing Internet sites are grounded in desktop PC-oriented services and were not designed with a mobile phone in mind, which has led to less than ideal performance for consumers," said mTLD CEO Neil Edwards. "The dotMobi sites are tailor-made for browsing and navigating on the mobile phone, making a far better experience." Dublin-based mTLD gained approval from ICANN for the ".mobi" domain in the second half of 2005; the company's investors include Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, T-Mobile, Vodafone and the GSM Association. The company said that it has already issued temporary domain names to Nokia, TIM, Vodafone and The Weather Channel. The dot-mobi Internet addresses are set for official launch on May 22. A "sunrise period" for wireless industry trade group members will be offered between May 22-29, giving the industry a week's advance to register their own trademarks.

Mobile Media Delivery Firm Roundbox Raises $15 Million

Florham Park, N.J. - Roundbox, a developer of mobile media broadcast technology, announced that it has raised $15 million in its second round of venture capital financing. Polaris Venture Partners led the investment round; previous investors RRE Ventures and Core Capital Partners also participated. New Jersey-based Roundbox's technology can distribute live TV, video clips, music and other media to cell phones over mobile networks such as FLO, DVB-H and DMB, as well as using various multicasting network technologies. The company's technology will be utilized by Gemstar-TV Guide in the launch of its TV Guide Mobile service. Roundbox will use the funds to expand its product capabilities, and for marketing and sales operations.

MobiTV Hits 1 Million Subscribers for Mobile Phone TV Service

Las Vegas - MobiTV, a provider of mobile TV delivery services for more than 20 wireless carriers including Sprint, Cingular, Alltel and Orange, announced on Tuesday that it has surpassed one million subscribers worldwide. After launching its first mobile TV service in late 2003, the company reached 500,000 subscribers in 2005; the second half-million subscribers have been added in the last six months. "Word-of-mouth referrals by subscribers who love the service, combined with incredible operator and content partnership support has brought us to this historic milestone even faster than we ever expected," said MobiTV chairman and CEO Phillip Alvelda. Separately, MobiTV said on Tuesday that it will extend availability of its mobile TV service to Windows Mobile-powered phones and devices, as well as Windows XP-based PCs and laptops. These services will utilize Microsoft's codecs, media player and digital rights management technologies.

Verizon Mobile Music Library Offers 1 Million Songs

Bedminster, N.J. - Verizon Wireless said on Tuesday that its V CAST Music mobile music download service now features an available catalog of over one million songs. Separately, the company said the upcoming version of its Song IDentity application, which lets users automatically identify songs playing by holding their phone near a speaker, will now also launch software enabling them to download the corresponding master recording ringtone. Developed by Rocket Mobile, Song IDentity 2.0 will let users purchase the ringtones for songs identified using the service for $2.99 each.

iLoop Mobile Powers IGN's Direct2Drive Mobile Game Distribution

San Jose, Calif. - IGN Entertainment, a recent acquisition of News Corp that provides video game news, information and services, announced on Tuesday the launch of Direct2Drive Mobile, a new version of its third-party digital content download service for mobile phones. The company partnered with San Jose, Calif.-based iLoop Mobile to create the service, which will let companies create their own mobile storefronts and sell mobile games, movies, soundtracks and licensed third-party mobile content through IGN.

Qualcomm's MediaFLO to Deliver Mobile Concerts From Network LIVE

San Diego - MediaFLO, a unit of Qualcomm that offers wireless multimedia services in the U.S. on 3G mobile phones, announced on Monday that it signed a multi-year agreement with Network LIVE, to offer live and prerecorded music concerts, and other content on the multicasting service. Network LIVE is a joint venture between AOL, XM Satellite Radio and concert promoter AEG.
