Note to Apple iPhone Commentators - Don't be Blind to the Network Problem

Authored by Scott Karp on June 29, 2007 - 10:47am.

This is a follow-up to my post on why I didn’t buy an iPhone, i.e. because the AT&T network sucks. I’ve been amazed at how the iPhone has caused so many tech commentators to be blind to the network problem. Valleywag’s iPhone scorecard really made it hit home for me, when I saw the high overall GPA despite the failing network grades.

Authored by Scott Karp on June 27, 2007 - 3:17pm.
I just bought a Blackberry 8830 from Verizon, forgoing the opportunity to be among the first iPhone owners. This decision surprised me because I had been eagerly looking forward to the iPhone after praising it as a truly innovative product, despite much tech geek snarking. And now that the mainstream tech pundocracy has weighted in, it appears that the iPhone does indeed live up to expectations — mostly.

Authored by Scott Goldberg on January 30, 2007 - 12:25pm.
Motorola PEBLVoce, self-proscribed “the world’s first premium wireless service,” arrives with a question mark: What, exactly, will the service do that I can’t find elsewhere?  At first glance the answer lacks detail.  “(Voce) combines outstanding coverage and advanced mobile devices with an unprecedented level of personalized attention and care,” says the company’s “About Us” page.  That’s a big claim for an industry that constantly updates its products and offers plenty of “luxurious” alternatives (see: Apple’s iPhone, due in June).
