CES: Motorola and Yahoo Drive the Hype for Mobile Media in 2007

Las Vegas - CES kicked off the week with a keynote on Monday morning by Motorola’s CEO Ed Zander. Together with Marco Boerries, SVP Connected Life at Yahoo, Zander announced a new mobile Internet partnership. He also publicized another new partnership - with Warner Music - that will focus on music-based products and experiences for mobile phones. But overall nothing truly ground-breaking was unveiled.

Chinese User-Generated Content Search Firm Qihoo Secures $25 Million

Beijing - Chinese search engine developer Qihoo announced that it has raised $25 million in its second round of venture capital financing. Highland Capital Partners led the investment round; Redpoint Ventures and previous investors Sequoia Capital China, CDH, Matrix Partners and IDG Ventures also participated.

Seattle - Medio Systems, a provider of mobile search and advertising technologies, announced on Thursday that it has raised $30 million in its second round of venture capital financing.

Mobile Search & Advertising Firm JumpTap Raises $22 Million

Cambridge, Mass. - JumpTap, a developer of mobile search and advertising technology, has raised $22 million in its third round of venture capital, led by Valhalla Partners. Other investors in the deal include General Catalyst Partners, BCE Capital, and Redpoint Ventures. Founded in 2004, Cambridge, Mass.-based JumpTap provides wireless carriers with a mobile search platform that drives "third-party revenues." Its business model involves a search engine service that "pays carriers for search success."

Mobile Voice Navigation Firm Promptu Raises $11.6 Million

Yahoo Sponsored Ads to Appear on Go2 Mobile Search Results

Sunnyvale, Calif. - Yahoo announced on Wednesday that it has partnered with mobile search provider go2 Directory Systems. Under the deal -- the first of its kind for Yahoo in the U.S. -- Yahoo's sponsored search results will be featured in go2's mobile search results.

San Diego - V-Enable, a developer of voice- and text-based mobile search technology, announced on Monday that it has been awarded a U.S. patent for its mobile voice search technology.

AOL Launches New Mobile Browsing Service

Dulles, Va. - AOL on Monday unveiled a new mobile browsing service designed to automatically adapt Web pages for mobile screens. The company said that the service, which can be used by wireless subscribers with Web-enabled phones, has been integrated into its various mobile search services. The launch was just one of several key wireless announcement announcements for AOL on Monday. The company also said that it has launched a new wireless version of its AOL.com portal for Sprint subscribers and debuted a new Web-enabled service for MapQuest. AOL said that a new service from MapQuest will soon allow users to access voice-guided, turn-by-turn directions from their cell phones.

Yahoo Expands Mobile Search Services

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Yahoo on Thursday announced the launch of a text-message-based mobile search service, and also expanded its mobile search engine beyond HTML to include the WAP wireless protocol utilized by many cell phones. Yahoo SMS Search lets users text a special number ("92466") with requests for local information or weather reports, and receive Yahoo search results in return. The company also expanded its full Web search for cell phones to WAP, which will translate full Web pages and squeeze them to fit on cell phone screens; previously, only users with phones capable of displaying HTML could access Yahoo search.
