Modeo Launches Beta of Live Mobile TV Service in NYC

Houston - Modeo, a unit of Crown Castle International, on Monday announced the launch of a beta test of its live mobile TV service in New York City. In development for three years, the Modeo service will deliver live video content from providers including Discovery Channel and Fox News to Modeo Mobile TV Smartphones.

Las Vegas - Modeo, a developer of a mobile TV network, on Wednesday introduced its first mobile TV smartphone model, intended for use with its network that is scheduled to launch in select U.S. cities in 2006. The DVB-H handset will be manufactured by Taiwan-based HTC, and use Microsoft's Windows Mobile and copy-protection technologies.

San Francisco - CNET News.com on Monday reported on two technology firms building "supercharged" mobile TV networks, Qualcomm's MediaFlo and Crown Castle International's Modeo. These "multicast" networks function more like traditional TV, transmitting signals once to many devices, as opposed to "unicast" networks from Sprint, Verizon and Cingular that provide individual transmissions to each mobile phone. MediaFlo will spend $800 million to build a nationwide mobile TV network in five years, while Modeo plans to spend $500 million to reach the top 30 U.S. markets in two years. ABI Research estimates that the mobile TV equipment and services market will reach $27 billion by 2010.

Modeo to Launch Mobile TV Service in 30 U.S. Markets

Houston - Crown Castle Mobile Media, a developer of mobile TV delivery technology, announced on Wednesday that it has changed its name to Modeo, and plans to deliver a live mobile TV service to the top 30 U.S. markets. Texas-based Modeo completed a pilot of its service in Pittsburgh last year, and plans to launch commercially in markets including New York City during 2006 and 2007, with handsets from Motorola and Nokia. The Modeo service will be on display at the Consumer Electronics Show.
