San Francisco - Yahoo (NASD: YHOO) is taking some criticism for following a move Microsoft (NASD: MSFT) was compelled to backtrack on, namely discontinuing a digital rights management-laden music service in a way that will make some songs purchased by consumers unplayable. Microsoft eventually added three years of support for customers who purchased downloads from its MSN Music store, who complained that their songs would no longer be available if they ever had to reauthorize them on another computer. Redmond, Wash. - As a result of Microsoft shuttering its MSN Music store in favor of its Zune Marketplace, the company has told MSN Music customers that the licenses for the songs they purchased can be updated for the last time up until Aug. 31 -- after which time the songs cannot ever again be transferred from the devices on which they are currently stored, according to reports. Cedar Knolls, N.J. - MediaBay, a distributor of spoken word audio content, announced on Wednesday that it has signed an agreement with MusicNet, a digital music service provider, to offer its library of 75,000 hours of spoken word content to MusicNet partners including Yahoo, HMV and Virgin Digital. New Jersey-based MediaBay also recently announced a partnership with Microsoft, to create a co-branded subscription service and audiobook store on MSN Music.

Redmond, Wash. -- Microsoft announced on Tuesday that its MSN Music digital download store and music service has partnered with independent music site GarageBand.com to offer free downloads, radio and other content from unsigned artists. MSN Music will feature a GarageBand.com page highlighting five up-and-coming musicians from the site's online community of over 100,000 musicians, as well as a streaming music station featuring its artists. MSN Music will also offer a large portion of the 1.7 million songs from the former MP3.com archive, acquired by GarageBand.com in April. MSN Music will initially offer 150,000 free MP3.com tracks through a link on its site.
