Report: Multiplayer Online Game Market in West to Hit $1.5B by 2011

London - The market for massively multiplayer online games in the West reached $1 billion for the first time in 2006, with North American subscriptions totaling $576 million and European subscriptions $299 million, according to a report from market research firm Screen Digest.

Habbo Virtual World for Teens Debuts "SnowStorm" Multiplayer Game

Los Angeles - Finland's Sulake Corporation, parent company of the Habbo online virtual world for teens, on Monday announced the launch of a snowball fight multiplayer game across its 29 Habbo communities around the world. To promote "SnowStorm," Habbo is also offering a range of snow-themed stickers, gadgets and furniture for Habbo users' personal pages. Habbo currently counts a total of over 7.5 million unique monthly users, including 2 million at its North American sites.

Activision to Buy Multiplayer Game Technology Firm DemonWare

Santa Monica, Calif. - Video game publisher Activision announced on Tuesday that it will acquire DemonWare, an Ireland-based developer of network middleware technologies for console and PC games.

Indie Game Developer Verse Studios Looking to Raise $500,000

Los Angeles - Verse Studios, an independent game developer formed in May 2006, announced on Monday that it has commenced an external funding round and hopes to raise $500,000 over the next year. "We are really excited to be moving forward as a company, and are looking forward to talking with investors and colleagues at GDC. This round of funding will allow us to realize the initiatives that are so important to us as a gaming company, and as members of the gaming community," said Verse co-founder and CEO Travis Savo. Los Angeles-based Verse is currently at work on "Verse: Tactics," a multiplayer online real-time strategy PC game.

Sierra's "FreeStyle Street Basketball" to Feature Original UMG Tracks

Los Angeles - Sierra Online, a unit of Vivendi Games, announced on Friday that it has signed a producer and a number of artists from Vivendi's Universal Music Group to create an exclusive in-game soundtrack for its "FreeStyle Street Basketball" massively multiplayer online PC game. G-Unit's Lloyd Banks will create the game's official theme song, while Young Hot Rod and Sha Money XL will contribute original tracks. The game will initially be available for a free public preview in the spring, and then later offered at retail and via digital distribution.

James Cameron Developing Sci-Fi Film With Multiplayer Game Tie-In

San Francisco - Director James Cameron ("Titanic," "The Terminator") plans to produce a sci-fi film that will first be introduced to consumers through an online multiplayer game before it debuts in theaters, BusinessWeek Online reported. "So much of literary sci-fi is about creating worlds that are rich and detailed and make sense at a social level," Cameron told BusinessWeek Online. "We'll create a world for people and then later present a narrative in that world." Cameron is reportedly already at work on the screenplay for "Project 880," which he said is still at least two years off.

Nintendo to Ship Multiplayer "Tetris DS" on March 20

Redmond, Wash. - Nintendo of America announced on Tuesday that it plans to ship "Tetris DS" for its DS handheld game console to retailers on March 20. The DS version of the popular puzzle game features Nintendo-themed modes, based on elements of games including "Super Mario Bros.," "The Legend of Zelda" and "Metroid." The touch-controlled game also incorporates use of the free Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service, to enable online multiplayer play for up to 10 DS owners.

Zone 4 Play Launches First Multiplayer Texas Hold'em for Interactive TV

Wilmington, Del. - Zone 4 Play, a developer of interactive TV games, announced on Tuesday that it has launched what it says is the first interactive TV multiplayer Texas Hold'em poker game. Currently available on Sky's Five channel, the game will also be made available on three additional channels later this year.

Multiplayer Online Game Publisher Turbine Raises $30 Million

Westwood, Mass. -- Online video game publisher Turbine announced on Monday that it has raised $30 million in its second round of venture capital financing. Tudor Ventures and Columbia Capital led the investment round; previous investors Highland Capital Partners and Polaris Venture Partners also participated. In addition to the massively multiplayer online roleplaying game "Asheron's Call," Massachusetts-based Turbine is also producing "Dungeons & Dragons Online," based on the roleplaying board game, and "The Lord of the Rings: Middle-Earth Online" for release in 2005.

Multiplayer Gaming Developer Butterfly.net Raises $10 Million

Martinsburg, W.Va. -- Butterfly.net, a provider of infrastructure services to support massively multi-player online games, said on Monday that it has raised $10 million in its third round of funding, co-led by JVP and Worldview Technology Partners. Networking giant Cisco Systems also participated, as did previous investors Adena Ventures and Walker Ventures. The company has created a network grid designed to allocate computing and network resources to the most popular games. The technology helps reduce the costs associated with developing, launching and operating large-scale online games that connect players on PCs, consoles and mobile devices.

Mobile Multiplayer Gaming Firm Kayak Interactive Raises $11.8 Million

Princeton, N.J. -- Kayak Interactive, a developer of mobile multiplayer video game technology, announced on Wednesday that it has raised $11.8 million in its first round of venture capital financing. VantagePoint Venture Partners led the investment round; TL Ventures and EnerTech Capital also participated. New Jersey-based Kayak Interactive's technology enables developers and publishers to design and distribute advanced mobile multiplayer games across wireless networks that are capable of supporting tournaments and leagues.

Disney to Launch "Toontown" Online Multiplayer Game for Kids in June

North Hollywood, Calif. -- Disney Online, a unit of Walt Disney Internet Group, announced on Monday that it will launch "Toontown Online," which it says is the first massively multiplayer 3D online game for kids and families, on June 2. The $9.95 monthly service will be available as a download, and will also be sold at retail beginning in September via a Disney specialty card powered by AT&T Prepaid Web Cents technology. The game features special communications software that will let kids chat with one another in a safe online environment. Handheld Device Maker Palm Sued Over Wireless Multiplayer Gaming Patent

Milpitas, Calif. -- Handheld device maker Palm has been sued for patent infringement, by a company that claims Palm is infringing by letting users of its PDAs connect wirelessly to one another over a network to play multiplayer games. The broadly worded patent, granted in 1997 to Peer-to-Peer Systems LLC, covers devices "communicating over an ad-hoc, wireless, all-to-all broadcast network." In addition to Palm, Peer-to-Peer Systems has sued Cybiko, a maker of handheld games that can connect wirelessly to one another.
