eMusic CEO: Price Hike Prompted by Indies, Not Sony Deal

Authored by Mark Hefflinger on June 15, 2009 - 11:56am.
San Francisco - Digital music service eMusic said that its recent price increase which has many users unhappy had more to do with calls to raise prices from independent labels than it did with its new deal to add Sony Music's catalog to its offering, Wired.com reported. "The price change is something that all of our labels have been asking for, for a long time, and it's really a necessary move for us to maintain a viable business," CEO Danny Stein told Wired.com. "We're about 50 percent cheaper than iTunes and Amazon. And we hope those people will stick with us and see what we do with the Sony catalog and all the other labels that we may get in the future."

Analysis: eMusic and the Long Tail

Authored by Robin Goad on January 20, 2009 - 7:23am.

The online music retailer eMusic has put out some interesting data that, it is claimed, supports the famous “Long Tail” theory of online retail. Chris Anderson (picture), the editor in chief of Wired magazine, coined the phrase in a 2004 article, claiming that Internet retailers would sell more niche products at the expense of mass-market items. However, this theory was challenge in a recent study by Will Page and Andrew Bud, which claimed more than 10 million of the 13 million music tracks available on the Internet failed to find a single buyer last year. In response, eMusic has reported that 75% of the tracks in its catalogue were bought at least once in 2008.

eMusic Says Sales Data Confirm "Long Tail" Theory

Authored by Mark Hefflinger on January 16, 2009 - 1:06pm.

New York - Digital music service eMusic said this week that internal data showing that 75% of the songs in its 5 million-track catalog were downloaded last year prove that the "long tail" theory of retail has merit, at least when it comes to its own service. A study in November from the MCPS-PRS U.K. licensing body concluded that the long tail theory was flawed, after finding that of the 13 million songs on the Internet, ten million had not sold a single copy.
