New York - Dimensional Associates, the private equity unit of JDS Capital that owns digital music service eMusic, is in talks to acquire all of the shares of digital music and video distributor The Orchard (NASD: ORCD) it does not already own, PaidContent reported, citing an SEC filing.

New York - The Orchard (NASD: ORCD), a digital distributor of independent music and video content, announced on Wednesday that president and CEO Greg Scholl has resigned, and additionally that the company has laid off 20% of its staff as part of a cost-cutting initiative. Scholl will remain on through the end of October, at which time Danny Stein -- an Orchard board member and currently also chairman and CEO of eMusic -- will replace him as interim CEO.

The Orchard Lands Chinese Mobile Deal; Largest Video Deal

New York - The Orchard (NASD: ORCD), a digital distributor of independent music and video, has signed a marketing and licensing pact with ZTEMT, a Chinese provider of mobile infrastructure and services. Under the deal, The Orchard will power the English-language sections of China Telecom's new iMusic service, and provide its top 100,000 songs. Separately, the company announced its largest digital video distribution deal to date, with action sports production company Video Actions Sports. The Orchard will sell VAS videos to Web and mobile services like iTunes and Hulu.

Datz Launches Unlimited MP3 Download Service

London - European online music store Datz this week announced the launch of a new unlimited download service that provides DRM-free MP3 tracks for an annual fee of about $160. Powered by 24-7 Entertainment, the Datz Music Lounge will feature tracks from major labels Warner Music Group (NYSE: WMG) and EMI, as well as independents including The Orchard and Beggars Group. One stipulation is that users purchase a kit that includes a USB key that must be inserted into a PC to access the service.

Acrobat Music, Ernest Jenning Record Co. and Wu Music Group have each signed exclusive deals to distribute their forthcoming releases in physical format throughout the U.S. Slated for release are albums from artists including Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, Wu-Tang Clan and Dalek.
