SanDisk Acquires Wi-Fi MP3 Player Maker MusicGremlin

Milpitas, Calif. - SanDisk (NASD: SNDK), a maker of MP3 players and flash storage media, announced on Tuesday that it has acquired MusicGremlin, the maker of a Wi-Fi-enabled digital audio player. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Founded in 2003, New York-based MusicGremlin's eponymous device was one of the first to allow music direct music downloads over a Wi-Fi connection without the need of a computer.

Report: Scandinavian’s Predict the End of the iPod-Era

A majority of young Scandinavians believe that the next generation cell phones that double as portable MP3-players are soon going to make iPods a thing of the past. It is one of the interesting findings in a survey of 3000 young people from Sweden, Norway and Denmark between the ages of 15 to 35. The study was commissioned by the cable network MTV and Finnish telecom giant Nokia and conducted by the Swedish consumer research company Cint.

New York - MusicGremlin, the developer of a digital music service that enables downloads directly to portable devices over a Wi-Fi connection, announced on Wednesday that it plans to introduce the service at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next month. The company will debut a portable digital audio player that is enabled for Wi-Fi, and comes with embedded service software that provides access to a library of over two million songs. New York-based MusicGremlin partnered with MusicNet to provide the service's catalog, and will offer both an unlimited monthly subscription service and the ability to purchase a la carte downloads for permanent ownership. The devices will also be able to connect with one another, allowing owners to browse each others' collections, and download songs from one another if both are subscribers. MusicGremlin's portable players are slated to go on sale in the first quarter of 2006. The direct-to-device software will also be offered to third-party MP3 player makers.

New York -- MusicGremlin, the developer of a direct-to-device digital music download service, announced on Tuesday that MusicNet -- a major label-backed digital music distributor -- will provide technology for its music store, as well as its 1.5 million track library for sale on MusicGremlin devices. New York-based MusicGremlin's technology adds Wi-Fi software to MP3 players, so they can download songs directly over a wireless Internet connection, without the need of a separate computer. The first generation of MusicGremlin-enabled MP3 players are scheduled to launch in the second half of 2005, offering both a monthly subscription service with unlimited downloads, and an a la carte store for permanent downloads. MusicGremlin said its devices will also allow owners to share music wirelessly with other users.

Digital Music Retail Developer MusicGremlin Raises Funds

New York -- MusicGremlin, a developer of digital music retail technology that delivers downloads directly to secure portable devices, announced on Thursday that it has raised an undisclosed amount in its second round of funding, led by Allen & Company LLC. The company has raised more than $5 million to date. New York-based MusicGremlin says its technology will enable consumers to purchase and download digital music directly to portable devices without the need of a PC, as well as share their music collections directly from their devices. The company, which said it will use the funds for working capital and to expand its operations, added that it has developed its second generation product and is in the process of licensing its technology to consumer electronics firms.
