Austin - MusicBrainz, a user-maintained online music encyclopedia, announced that it has partnered with MusicIP, developer of a "music relationship engine," with the two pledging to combine and share music identification and metadata. MusicIP's MusicDNS service -- similar to Gracenote's CDDB, which identifies a CD based on the number of tracks and the length of those tracks -- has identified a growing library of 16 million tracks based on their acoustic properties. The MusicBrainz community of nearly 200,000 registered users has so far catalogued 4.5 million tracks from 370,000 artists. MusicIP said that it will donate 10% of revenue from the delivery of MusicBrainz data via MusicDNS back to the MetaBrainz Foundation, which maintains the non-profit MusicBrainz community.
