London - Digital music service providers Napster and MusicNet have reached a settlement on royalties to be paid to U.K. songwriters and music publishers for delivering their music online and to mobile phones. The MCPS-PRS Alliance, which represents U.K. songwriters, said the three-year deal is similar to an accord it reached last week with the British Phonographic Industry and digital music retailers including iTunes and T-Mobile, which gives songwriters 8% of gross revenue minus value-added taxes. MusicNet and Napster said the deal will result in the withdrawal of their references on the matter to the U.K. Copyright Tribunal.

Featuring 2 million tracks licensed from MusicNet, Urge offers 99 cent a la carte downloads, a $9.95 streaming subscription plan, and a $14.95 subscription that allows unlimited downloads to compatible devices. Other features of the service include 130 streaming radio stations; "super playlists", which contain hundreds of songs in a given genre; "feeds", where users can sign up for updated playlists in certain genres and sync them to portable players; and "auto mixes", or automatically generated playlists built around specific artists or music styles selected by users.

New York-based MusicGremlin's technology adds Wi-Fi software to MP3 players, so they can download songs directly over a wireless Internet connection, without the need of a separate computer. New York -- MusicNet, a joint venture between several major record labels and technology firm RealNetworks, announced on Monday that it has signed a long-term agreement with U.K. music retailer HMV. Under the terms, New York-based MusicNet will provide its library of licensed tracks, as well as delivery technology to support HMV's new digital music download store. HMV said it plans to invest about $19 million to launch the service in the second half of 2005. The U.K. retailer, which operates 200 locations, also contracted with Microsoft late last year to develop customized jukebox player software, which users will be required to download in order to access the online store. HMV will offer the player software both online and from its retail stores.

New York -- MusicNet, a digital music subscription service joint venture between Bertelsmann, EMI, RealNetworks, Sony and Warner, announced on Tuesday that it has partnered with Cflix, a campus video-on-demand provider, to launch a two-month pilot legal digital music service program at Yale University. MusicNet will power Cflix's Ctrax service, which will offer subscriptions for $2 per month, and downloads in packs of 10 for $8 and 20 for $15. "This will revolutionize the way the music world interacts with college students," said MusicNet CEO Alan McGlade. "Cflix's reputation for delivering rich media to colleges coupled with MusicNet's digital music platform and extensive catalog will assure a great product offering." The companies said that as many as 20 colleges and universities will be rolling out the Ctrax service for the fall of 2004. MusicNet rival Napster has launched similar discounted campus digital music services at schools including Penn State University.
