The company's first product will be an all-new intellectual property that combines massively multiplayer online games and social networking, and is being designed and created by Meteor co-founders Adam Powell and Donna Williams. Los Angeles - Viacom's MTV Networks has announced that its Nickelodeon children's cable network plans later this month to launch a series of animated mini-shows based on Neopets, the online virtual pet community acquired by MTV Networks in 2005 for an estimated $160 million. The mini-shows will air in between other shows, and serve to introduce kids to Neopets characters and drive traffic to the website, which claims 40 million registered users. New York -- Viacom's MTV Networks announced on Monday that it has acquired NeoPets, which operates an online youth community with 25 million members. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Founded in 2000, Neopets.com offers members an online community where they care for "virtual pets" and interact with one another. The site, now offered in 10 languages, is consistently rated among the top-10 "stickiest" websites by Nielsen/NetRatings and comScore Media Metrix. "This property is a perfect fit for MTV Networks, and its acquisition is an important move for us as we aggressively move forward as a multi-platform entertainment company, dedicated to serving our audiences across all the platforms that they use and love," said MTV Networks chairman and CEO Judy McGrath.
