U.S. Album Sales Down 9.5%, Digital Sales Up 45% in 2007

Los Angeles - Despite a 45% increase in digital sales, overall U.S. music album sales fell 9.5% in 2007, the Associated Press reported, citing data from Nielsen SoundScan. Physical album sales totaled 500.5 million in 2007, down 15% from a year ago; however, when digital tracks are counted in tens, to represent an album's typical length, album sales dropped 9.5% overall.

Los Angeles - Global recorded music sales were down for the seventh consecutive year in 2006, when CD and physical sales fell 11% to $17.5 billion, while digital music sales climbed 85% to $2.1 billion, according to data from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), an international record label trade group.

Digital Music Sales Growth Slows Down

New York - Digital music sales growth is slowing from last year, according to first quarter numbers from Nielsen Soundscan. At the end of first-quarter 2007, digital track sales were up 51.9% compared to up 87% for the same period 2006. Digital album sales, which total 11.5 million units, were up 56% (144% for 2006). However, if you count digital as a percentage of album sales, it is nearly 10% now, which is double of what they were at the end of first-quarter 2006.
