CES 2008 - The Consumer Electronics Show, which officially opened today here in Las Vegas, is, as usual, controlled chaos... Authored by Robin Goad on November 28, 2007 - 8:42am.

However, one gadget that has crept up slowly without a huge amount of fanfare is the digital photo frame – those small LCD photo frames that show digital photos either via a USB connection or memory card slot. In fact, they are now so popular that last week searches for them overtook searches for cameras – digital or otherwise.

Christmas, of course, comes earlier every year. For retailers it starts earlier than most as they try to identify the year’s 'must have' gifts. In order to give them a bit of a hand, we’ve spent the last week analyzing search data in order to make some predictions as to what we think will be this year’s hot gadgets, entertainment, toys and fashions.

The Xbox 360 has overtaken the Nintendo Wii as the most searched for gaming console based on share of US Internet searches for the first time since the Wii’s launch in November 2006. The Xbox 360 is #1 console based on sales volume but the Wii has enjoyed the fastest growth in market share. We often find that Internet searches are a leading indicator and can be predictive of future sales growth.

In the “duh” category, senior analyst Paul Verna predicts in an eMarketer report, "Video Game Advertising: Getting to the Next Level," that “in-game advertising will evolve in scope and sophistication, offering new platforms for marketers, new business opportunities for technology providers and vital revenue for game developers, who have struggled with the escalating production costs of increasingly complex games."

Nintendo Wii has become the hip new game console of choice for the Web 2.0 crowd. Nintendo has set a sales target for the full year 2007 at 6 million units and recently raised its Wii software sales forecast from 17 million games to 21 million games. Nintendo is also experimenting with using the connected platform to bridge into other forms of content. Here is a first look of the interface, taken by a camcorder directly pointed at the TV. The quality is not great, but it gives you a good idea of this cool new way of delivering news:
