NPD Report Indicates Blu-ray Players Still Slow To Catch On

Authored by Jay Baage on May 2, 2008 - 8:26am.

New York - Sales of Blu-ray standalone players plummeted 40 percent from January to February, then rose only 2 percent from February to March in spite of winning the high def format war, according to a report by research firm NPD Group. This is bad news for the home entertainment industry, which has put its hopes into a drastic increase in adoption of the next generation high def DVD players after Toshiba dropped its support for the HD DVD format earlier this year in favor of Sony's (NYSE: SNE) Blu-ray format.

Port Washington, N.Y. - A new report from market research firm NPD Group finds that, contrary to popular belief that "hardcore" gamers are in the 18-34 demographic, in actuality 45% of heavy gamers are between the ages of six and 17. In addition, 21% of heavy gamers are female, contrary to most marketing that caters to a predominantly male audience. The report also noted that so-called "heavy" gamers represent just 3% of the total game playing population. "Heavy gamers can be critical to a title or retailer's success since they are the market leaders, but focusing on this segment entirely is ignoring a much broader consumer base and larger revenue potential," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier.

Forbes.com polled various analysts on the whether the rise will be sustained -- countering several months of soft sales -- or fade in coming months. While Merrill Lynch analyst Justin Post expects sales to rise in the next several months, based on Xbox 360 shipments and price cuts on other consoles, Cowen & Co. analyst Lowell Singer believes the April sales tally was an anomaly and soft sales will continue for the rest of the year.
